Hoops roundup: Canes open with win, Tigers rout Gordon Central, Cass teams fall to Spartans
The Cartersville and Adairsville boys basketball teams picked up wins Monday night with the Canes taking their season opener and the Tigers bouncing back to even their season mark. At Cass, the Lady Colonels and Colonels lost games to visiting Class AAAAAA South Paulding.
No. 10 CARTERSVILLE BOYS 72, NORTH PAULDING 64
The Cartersville boys basketball team opened its 2016-17 season with a 72-64 win over North Paulding Monday at the Dalton Tournament.
Jaylon Pugh led the Canes with 31 points. Perignon Dyer scored 13 and Isaac Gridley 9 for Cartersville. Daunta Bryan collected three steals and Luke Schiltz gathered five offensive rebounds.
Canes’ coach, Mike Tobin, was pleased with the effort his team gave in the opener and expects up to 30 football players to tryout for the team once the football playoffs conclude.
Cartersville (1-0) plays again in the Dalton tournament Tuesday night against Northwest Whitfield.
ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 67, GORDON CENTRAL 32
The Tigers routed Gordon Central Monday with a balanced scoring attack and a defense that allowed only two points in the first quarter and three in the third period.
Grayson Dailey and Hunter Hice of Adairsville scored eight each to lead all scorers in the game. Ethan Belcher and Cole Hewitt totaled seven each. Denzel Pitt, Trevis Williams, and Savaun Henderson finished with six apiece for the Tigers.
Lolyn Nix scored seven and Dawson Lackey six for the Warriors
Adairsville (1-1) plays at Excel Christian Academy Tuesday night.
No. 3 SOUTH PAULDING BOYS 53, CASS 38
The Colonels lost to Class AAAAAA 3rd-ranked South Paulding, 53-38. The Spartans scored the first ten points of the game and led 16-10 at the end of the first period on their way to a 29-20 advantage at halftime.
Drew Shepherd had a game-high 17 points to lead South Paulding. Ja’cori Wilson and Kane Williams scored 12 and 11, respectively, for the Spartans.
C.J. Bennett scored 11 points for the Colonels. Ashton Burley added ten points and Ian Whittington finished with nine.
Cass (1-1) plays on the road Saturday against Notre Dame of Chattanooga.
SOUTH PAULDING GIRLS 64, CASS 49
The Lady Colonels took an early 15-12 lead on visiting South Paulding Monday afternoon, but the Lady Spartans outscored Cass 20-12 in the second period to take a 32-27 halftime lead they would not relinquish.
Kelsi Fizer led South Paulding with a game-high 24 points.
The Lady Colonels struggled from the free throw line, making only nine of 20 attempts, but still managed to narrow the South Paulding lead to eight with three minutes to go in the game before falling by 15.
Jana Morning led the Lady Colonels with 14 points. Sharia Wade followed with eight points and Kyla Michienzi scored seven. Payton Stoddard totaled six points. Lyric Curtis and Kyler Trouten scored five points each, while Esmeralda Thomas and Chanel Clemmons added three apiece.
Cass (1-1) will play North Murray Saturday at the Ridgeland Thanksgiving Classic.
