Lady Cats take opening round state playoff series at Miller Grove
Woodland softball swept a doubleheader at Miller Grove Wednesday night to win their first round Class AAAAA playoff series.
The Lady Cats won the opener 5-3 and closed out the best-of-three series in the nightcap, 11-3.
In the opener, Woodland took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth and added two more runs in the fifth to lead 5-2. The Lady Cats then held on for a two-run win.
In the Game 2 series clincher, Woodland scored three runs in each of their first three frames to grab a 9-3 lead, then added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to end the game in five innings, 11-3.
Sarah Baynard (12 IP, 5ER, 14H, 2BB, 10K) needed only 75 pitches in each game to pick up both wins in the pitching circle for the Lady Cats.
Brittney Cox led the Woodland offensive attack with seven hits, including a double, two runs scored, and three RBIs in the doubleheader.
Caroline Higdon had a pair of doubles in her four hit series. She scored three runs and drove in four. Jordan Duck and Skylar Chappell finished the series with three hits each. All three hits by Chappell were doubles and she drove in a pair of runs. Duck’s three hits included one double and one RBI. She scored twice and stole a base.
Jamison Kilgo contributed a pair of hits, stole two bases, scored a run and drove in one. Bella Carnes added one RBI with a hit, three runs scored, and four stolen bases. Kaylee Jones scored three runs. Morgan Bailey scored twice and Emma Jordan added one RBI.
Woodland (15-19) advances to the Class AAAAA second round where they will face Whitewater. The Lady Wildcats from Fayetteville swept Bainbridge in the first round -- also on Wednesday 4-1, and 13-2. Whitewater (24-5) is the top seed from Region 3-AAAAA. Bainbridge was the fourth seed from Region 1-AAAAA.
