Canes to host Class AAAAAAA Westlake
The top-ranked Cartersville Purple Hurricanes have won 17 straight games, including their first two of the 2016 season, heading into Friday night’s clash with Class AAAAAAA Westlake. That gives Cartersville the state’s longest winning streak and the No. 1 spot in Class AAAA.
The Canes (2-0) have wins over Allatoona 30-14 and Calhoun 56-0. Toss in a dominant performance over Westminster in the pre-season scrimmage, and Cartersville is off to yeat another highly impressive start.
Westlake (1-1) has a pair of highly touted offensive threats. Quarterback Ravaughn Burch tossed a pair of touchdown passes last week in a 29-13 victory over Shiloh. Wide receiver A.J. Terrell, who has committed to Clemson, scored touchdowns rushing and receiving. Terrell doubles as a cornerback on defense.
The Lions’ loss is a bit deceiving. They were edged 10-9 by Hughes in both teams’ season opener that was stopped in the third quarter due to bad weather.
For Cartersville, quarterback Trevor Lawrence is 35-of 58 passing for 602 yards and six touchdowns in two games. Avery Showell, a Wake Forest commit, has seven receptions for 129 yards and three scores. Antoine Jefferson has ten catches for 125 yards.
Westlake, who was ranked in their classification to begin the year, will bring an athletic team with good size to Weinman Stadium this Friday night for a 7:30pm kickoff.
Cartersville will counter with a bevy of collegiate level prospects including RB/DB Trey Creamer, LB Sean Holton, CB/WR Trase Fezzia, DL Brandon Wade, and OL Dalen Curtis among others.
