Lady Colonels pound Decatur, fall to Pierce County at Carrollton event
The Cass Lady Colonels’ softball team split a pair of games Saturday at East Carroll Park in Carrollton.
Cass lost 8-4 to Pierce County, but bounced back to defeat Decatur later in the day, 10-3.
The Lady Colonels scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to break open a 1-1 tie with Decatur. Cass then added four more runs in the seventh inning to distance themselves from the Lady Bulldogs, 10-1.
Decatur, who entered the day 2-0 on the season, scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for a 10-3 final.
Hope Elrod earned the pitching victory for Cass. She allowed only two earned runs on five hits and four walks. She struck out two.
The Lady Colonels pounded out 14 hits in their win.
Sarah Fox went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Sierrah Gani doubled and tripled for her two hits. Elrod drove in two runs with a pair of hits that included a double. Alexia Najarro finished with two hits that included a triple and two RBI. Maggie Collum added two hits and one RBI. Brittnee Mayer, Mae Mae McIntyre, and Arianna Mustin (RBI) each had one hit.
In the loss to Pierce County the Lady Colonels took an early lead and out hit the Lady Bears 10-8, but a four-run top of the third inning gave Pierce a lead they would maintain the rest of the way.
The Lady Colonels created some offensive chances, but failed to deliver enough key, timely hits.
Elrod had three hits for the Lady Colonels. She singled in the first, third, and fourth frames. Fox and Najarro (RBI) added two hits apiece. Gani and Sarah Moore both contributed a double and one RBI. Mustin (RBI) had the other Cass hit. Taylor Queen drove in a run with a groundout.
Moore (2.1IP, 5R, 3ER, 3H, 5BB, 1K) and Mustin (2.2IP, 3ER, 5H, 1BB, 3K) split the pitching duties for the Lady Colonels against Pierce County.
The win improved the Lady Bears season record to 3-2.
Cass (1-2) travels across town for a Region 7-AAAAA matchup at Woodland Tuesday at 6:30pm and will host Paulding County Thursday in a 5:55pm start. The Lady Colonels will host Fannin County at Stars Field at 1pm.
