'Athletes Beyond Bartow' tennis and track and field update for week ending April 10
This week's tennis and track and field updates for Athletes Beyond Bartow contain recent results for five Bartow County athletes.
Other track and field athletes are dealing with injuries or have gaps in their schedule leading toward conference championships in coming weeks. Bartow Sports Zone monitors athletes from Cartersville and Bartow County competing in collegiate athletic programs across the nation. It also includes Bartow's professional athletes. TENNIS
PEYTON GOLHOFFER — Ball State (Fr., Laurel Springs Academy, Cartersville resident) . . . won her singles match, playing at the No. 2 line, 7-6, 7-5, but lost on the No. 2 doubles line with partner, Audrey Berger, 7-6 (10-8), as the Ball State women defeated Akron 4-3 on April 8. She won her No. 2 line singles and paired again with Berger to win at No. 2 line doubles April 10 at University of Buffalo, but the team lost 4-3. The Cardinals (18-3 overall, 5-1 Mid-America Conference) have regular season conferences matches remaining at Bowling Green April 17 and at home against Toledo on April 23.
SOMALIA LEWIS — Emmanuel College (Fr., Woodland HS) . . . won her doubles match 8-4 with partner Chloe O’Connor as the Lady Lions won 9-0 at Columbia (SC) College April 2. Emmanuel is 6-16 overall and 2-7 in Conference Carolinas this season. The Lions host Johnson (TN) University and Converse College April 16-17.
TRACK AND FIELD
TROY HICKOM — Clayton State University (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . placed sixth of 43 competitors in the men’s 1500 meter run (4:14.58) and the Lakers finished seventh of 16 teams at the Berry Field Day Invitational in Rome, April 9. Clayton State is back in action as they head to Pembroke, N.C. for the 2016 Peach Belt Conference. That meet will run from April 21-23.
ANNA HIGHTOWER — Georgia Tech (Fr., Cartersville HS) . . . pole vaulter, placed 19th (11-01.75 / 3.40m) at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic April 8-9. The Jackets next host the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta April 22-23.
SAMANTHA PATTERSON — Jacksonville State (Soph, Woodland HS) … pole vaulter, placed 13th (11-08.00 / 3.56m) at the Western Kentucky University Hilltopper Relays April 9. The next meet for the Gamecocks is April 15-16 in Mobile, AL at the University of South Alabama Invitational.
