Lady Cats collect win at Dalton
The Woodland girls soccer team picked up a Sub-Region 7-AAAAA-A road victory Tuesday evening at Harmon Field in Dalton, 6-1. The victory avenged an overtime loss to the Lady Catamounts one season ago.
Dalton (2-5-1 overall, 1-5 in 7-AAAAA-A) scored the game’s first goal in the 11th minute on a crossing shot to the left side, but Woodland roared back with six unanswered goals and keeper Sam Simmons and the defense in front of her recorded a shutout the rest of the way.
Lindsay Scifers, coming off an injury suffered against Sequoyah, scored to tie the game 1-1 in the 31st minute off a corner kick from Keri Cagle. Kaitlin Winnenberg found the net in the final minute of the first half to give the Lady Cats a 2-1 lead at the intermission.
Cagle scored to open the second half on a pass from Amy Moreno in the 45th minute. Freshman Molly Plott scored the first goal of her high school career unassisted in the 64th minute. Winnenberg scored her second goal of the night unassisted with 16:20 remaining, and Allie Moates rounded out Woodland’s scoring with a header goal off a nice pass from Winnenberg in the game’s 72nd minute.
The Lady Cats improved to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in 7-AAAAA-A with the road win.
The Woodland boys (0-9, 0-5) fell to Dalton in the nightcap, 10-0. The Catamounts remained unbeaten in region play.
Woodland plays non-region matches at Coosa Friday evening.
