Chargers split twin bill Tuesday


Georgia Highlands College split a doubleheader with Wallace State-Hanceville CC Tuesday at LakePoint Park in Emerson winning the nightcap 6-3, but falling in the opener, 4-2.


Zach McCrum drove home Brandon Etheridge and Trenton Nutter with a two-run double in the sixth inning to lift the Chargers to the second game victory.


Nick Constan picked up the pitching win for GHC in 4 and 2/3 innings. He struck out six, walked five, and surrendered four hits.


The Chargers carried a 3-1 lead to the sixth, but WSHCC tied the game with a pair of runs. Following McCrum’s go-ahead double, Devin Bilardello reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Drew Davis for an insurance run and a 6-3 advantage.


Will Griffin picked up a save by recording the final five outs. He yielded no hits or runs on two walks and struck out a pair.


In Game 1, the Chargers led 2-1 through five innings only to lose 4-2.


Andrew Plunkett put Wallace State-Hanceville ahead in the sixth with a two-run double. The visitors added another run in the frame, then held off Georgia Highlands for the win.


The Chargers managed only three hits. One each by McCrum, Daniel Gooden, and Jonathan White. Gooden and White had one RBI each.


Zack Moon pitched 3 and 2/3 innings in relief to earn the win on the mound. He allowed no runs or hits, struck out three, and walked one. McCrum (5 IP, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K) suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers.


Georgia Highlands (14-10) plays Central Alabama CC Friday and Triton CC (IL) Saturday at LakePoint in Emerson.
