Chargers win three of four over weekend


Georgia Highlands College baseball won three of four games over the weekend. The Chargers defeated Cuyahoga (OH) CC Friday and won a pair of games against Guilford (NC) Technical College.


Brandon Bell racked up five RBI on three hits to lead the Chargers' offense in their 10-2 win over Cuyahoga (OH) CC. Daniel Gooden, Devin Billardello, Andrew Cooley, and Mitch Burger all had two hits each. Bell and Gooden both homered.


Tanner Thomson picked up the pitching victory against Cuyahoga. He scattered three hits and allowed only one earned run in four innings. He walked two and struck out five.


Tristan Roberts (3.2 IP, 3H, 1ER, 2BB, 6K), Blake Metvier (0.1 IP), and Bradley Hood (1 IP) also pitched.


In a Saturday doubleheader, Highlands split the pair of games with Guilford (NC) Tech.


GHC own 6-1 in the opener, but lost the second game, 8-6.


In the 6-1 win, Bilardello had two hits for the Chargers and drove in a run. Roberts added a pair of RBI on a hit. Jonathan White, Zach McCrum, Brandon Etheridge, and Bell added hits.


Bryan Quillens (5.2 IP, 7H, 1ER, 4BB, 5K) was the winning pitcher for Georgia Highlands. Colby Taylor (0.1 IP, 1BB) and Blake Metivier (1 IP) pitched in relief.


In the 8-6 loss, GTC scored all eight runs in the top of the fifth.


GHC took a 4-0 lead in the fourth and narrowed the deficit to two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.


McCrum had two hits (a double and a homerun), scored two runs, and drove home two more for the Chargers. Etheridge, Burger, Bilardello, and Jake Swan had the other GHC hits. Burger and Swan had RBIs.


The Chargers won the rubber game of the Guilford series Sunday, 9-1.


Georgia Highlands scored nine unanswered runs in the first six innings and the Chargers’ used seven pitchers to scattered nine hits and allow only a single run.


White had three hits and two RBI for the Chargers. Gooden (3RBI) and Bilardello (RBI) had two hits each. Etheridge, McCrum, Andrew Cooley, and Nick Fink had the other GHC hits.


Sam Sowerbrower (4 IP, 2H, 1BB, 3K) was credited with the pitching victory in the weekend’s finale. Chandler Newton, Trey Lang, Chris Morton, Dalton Isley, Will Griffin, and Taylor all pitched.


The Chargers are now 13-9 and host Wallace State-Hanceville Tuesday at 3pm at LakePoint for a doubleheader.
