Dalton edges Lady Colonels on penalty kicks
The Cass girls soccer team battled unbeaten Dalton through regulation time and overtimes Monday night. There was even a lightning delay that extended the length of the match, but Dalton ultimately won the match on penalty kicks at Cochran Stadium.
The Lady Colonels and Lady Catamounts were tied 3-3 after regulation and overtimes.
Dalton took the lead in the opening minutes on a goal by Deanna Marquez assisted by Angelise Altamirano.
Cass responded in the eighth minute when Kelsey Rivera found Logan Vermaas and she put one in the back of the net.
Dalton’s Salma Hijar put Dalton back ahead 2-1 with a headed goal off a corner kick by Altamirano, but Cass would respond again.
Morgan Delarm scored for the Lady Colonels in the 29th minute on an assist from Stephanie Robledo to tie the score, 2-2.
Dalton’s third goal came off a penalty kick after Cass was whistled for a handball in the penalty box. Maria Medina scored the goal for the Lady Catamounts.
Cass' Sidney Vermaas tied the game in the 72nd minute with the Lady Colonels' third goal.
There were no goals in the overtime periods, so the sub-region game went to penalty kicks.
Dalton missed its first two attempts. Cass converted on its first two attempts, but Dalton made three in a row while the Lady Colonels were stopped on two attempts by the Dalton keeper. The final Cass attempt sailed high over the crossbar and the Lady Catamounts had a 4-3 match victory by outscoring Cass, 3-2, on the penalty kicks.
With the loss, the Lady Colonels fall to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1 in sub-region play. Dalton improved to 2-0-1 and is now 1-0 in 7-AAAAA-A.
Cass plays at Woodland Friday (March 4) and travels to currently unbeaten Paulding County March 9.
