Former Woodland High School standout pole vaulter, Samantha Patterson, highlights this group of 'Athletes Beyond Bartow'. Patterson recently finished fifth in her conference indoor championships for Jacksonville State University. TRACK AND FIELD
MILES BEARDEN — Kansas State University (Jr., Darlington School; Cartersville resident) . . . high jumper, placed sixth (2.09m/6-10.25) at the 2016 Big 12 Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 27 at Iowa State University in Ames, IA. The Wildcats wrap up the indoor season March 11 and 12 with qualifying athletes headed to Birmingham, AL for the NCAA Indoor Championships. KSU opens its outdoor schedule at University of Texas-San Antonio Mar. 18-19.
ROGER HERRERA — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . distance runner, ran 18th (9:59.58) at the Columbus State University Cougar Invitational in the 3000 meter run. The Eagles finished 5th in the 13 team event. Reinhardt completes next in the Berry Victor Ice-Breaker Duals at Berry College March 5.
SAMANTHA PATTERSON (in photo) — Jacksonville State (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . pole vaulter, placed 5th (3.35m) at the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championship Feb. 27 at Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN. The JSU women finished ninth as a team. The Gamecocks now turn their attention to the outdoor portion of the season starting March 12 when they host the Gamecock Quad.
BLAKE PERRY — Jacksonville State (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . placed eighth in the triple jump (11.84m) and finished 12th in the 55 meter hurdles preliminaries (8.50) at the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championship Feb. 27 at Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN. The JSU women finished ninth as a team. The Gamecocks now turn their attention to the outdoor portion of the season starting March 12 when they host the Gamecock Quad.
WRESTLING
SAMMY ROSARIO — Cumberland University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . reached the finals of the Mid-South Conference / NAIA Regional Qualifier event in his 133-pound weight class to earn a spot in the NAIA National Championships March 4-5 at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, KS. Rosario is 16-7 in matches this season.
TENNIS
PEYTON GOLHOFFER — Ball State (Fr., Laurel Springs Academy, Cartersville resident) . . . partnered with Audrey Berger at the No. 2 doubles line to win 6-0 Feb. 27 as the Lady Cards defeated Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis (IUPUI). Golhoffer is now 14-3 in singles matches and 13-6 in doubles play as a freshman combining the Fall and Spring seasons. Ball State is now 7-2 on the season and has won five in a row. The Cardinals host Cincinnati March 4 before heading to Orlando March 8-18 for matches with South Dakota, Norfolk State, James Madison, and Wright State.
