Chargers edge St. Louis (MO) CC, 2-1
Zach McCrum drove in two runs with a homerun and an RBI single and Chargers' pitching kept visiting St. Louis (MO) CC at bay as Georgia Highlands College defeated the visiting Archers, 2-1, Sunday at LakePoint in Emerson.
McCrum had three hits on the day including a single that drove home former Cass Colonel, Brandon Etheridge, in the first inning. He also homered in the third inning and doubled in the eighth to go with a sixth inning walk.
Etheridge finished with a pair of hits that included a double. Drew Davis, Tristan Roberts, Devin Bilardello, and Andrew Cooley had the other Chargers hits.
Daniel Gooden picked up the pitching win for Georgia Highlands in six innings of work. He allowed no runs and limited the Archers to only a pair of hits and three walks while striking out eight.
With a 2-0 lead after six innings, Highlands’ pitchers Tanner Thompson, Blake Metivier, and Colby Taylor combined to limit St. Louis to a run on two hits. Will Griffin entered to work a spotless ninth to earn a save. Griffin needed only ten pitches and struck out two.
The loss dropped the Archers to 3-5 for the season.
GHC improved to 8-5 with the victory and is scheduled to host a doubleheader with Southern Union (AL) CC Wednesday at 3pm, before hosting a three game series with Sinclair State (OH) CC Friday (6pm) and Saturday (1pm) (Feb. 26-27).
