Georgia Highlands baseball wins season opener
Georgia Highlands took a three run lead after two innings, added another run in the fifth and then held on for an opening day 4-3 win over Surry (NC) CC at LakePoint Friday night.
Surry scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, a sacrifice fly by Danny Hauck in the sixth inning, and a fielder’s choice in the seventh frame, but never pulled even. Andrew Cooley led the Chargers at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance. He drove in a run and scored a run. He tripled in the second inning and added singles in the fourth and sixth frames.
Brandon Bell, Brandon Etheridge, and Devin Bilardello each had two hits for GHC. Daniel Gooden drove in a run with a hit and Zach McCrum drove home a run with a sacrifice fly.
Bryan Quillens recorded the pitching victory. He yielded one run on four hits and a pair of walks in four innings of work. He struck out four. Tanner Thomson, Sam Sowerbrower, and Will Griffin all worked in relief for the Chargers. Griffin was credited with a save.
The two teams are back on the diamond at LakePoint Saturday for a double header scheduled for 1 p.m. The four game series wraps up Sunday with a single game at noon.
