Cass High School basketball Jana Morning

The Cass Lady Colonels and Colonels resolved their second half woes from the previous night to complete a non-region sweep of visiting rival Cartersville Saturday night.

CASS GIRLS 59, CARTERSVILLE 48

The Cass girls team had one of its best outings of the year Saturday night taking a wire-to-wire victory over the Lady Canes. Tied 10-10 after one quarter, the Lady Colonels' shooting touch heated up and their defense began forcing turnovers that led to fast break points. Cass took a 25-14 lead to the locker room at halftime and basically maintained that difference for the remainder of the night on their way to an 11-point win, 59-48.

Four Lady Colonels reached double figures. Esmeralda Thomas led the way with 14 points, followed by 12 each from Kyla Michienzi and Jana Morning. Payton Stoddard totaled 11. Haley Gildersleeve added four points. Lexy Walraven, Chanel Clemmons, and Alexis Ware rounded out the Lady Colonels' scoring with two points each.

Kimara McClinic finished with 20 points for the Lady Canes and Madison McKinney scored 13. Monica Matuba added 6, Addie Smith 4, India Reed 2, Kyahna Brown 2, and Kai Bolton one point for Cartersville.

The Lady Colonels improved to 9-7 with the victory. Cartersville fell to 3-10 for the season.

CASS BOYS 64, CARTERSVILLE 60

The Colonels won a nail biting game Saturday night against the Cartersville Hurricanes. The Colonels led a slow starting first period, 12-9, but the offenses picked up the pace the rest of the way in a game that remained close throughout. Cass took a 33-26 lead at the intermission, but the Purple Hurricanes battled back.

The Colonels led by as many as 12 in the second half, but Cartersville narrowed that gap quickly. Late in the fourth quarter, Cartersville even managed to take a brief one point lead before the Colonels answered with a three pointer on the next trip down the floor. C.J. Bennett and Mike Sims paced the Colonels with 17 points each. Ashton Burley scored 12. Edvonte Curtis 6, Matt Mundy 5, Ian Whittington 3, Jacquez Mills 2, and Jake Collum 2 rounded out the Cass scoring. The Hurricanes' leading scorer was Jaylon Pugh with 18 points, followed by Trase Fezzia with 8 points. Cade Archer, Cortney Cooley, and Isaac Gridley scored 7 points each. Travon Davis added 5 for the Canes. T.J. Horton contributed 4, while Kobie Whitfield and Tiamon Pennymon added 2 each.

The win improved the Colonels' season record to 6-9. Cartersville is now 9-4. The Cass teams travel to Cedartown Tuesday, host Woodland Friday (Jan. 15), and travel to county rival Adairsville on Saturday (Jan.16). Cartersville plays at Ridgeland Tuesday, hosts Pickens Friday (Jan. 15), and travels to Rome on Saturday (Jan. 16).
