Colonels, Canes fall in tourney games Tuesday night
The boys' basketball teams at both Cass and Cartersville fell in tournament games Tuesday night. Both teams were playing the second of three consecutive days of games in their respective events that conclude Wednesday. Cass, playing in the semifinal round of the Lafayette High School Christmas Tournament, lost to Warren Central (KY).
Cartersville was topped by Maynard Jackson High School of Atlanta at the Pickens High School Christmas Tournament in Jasper.
WARREN CENTRAL (KY) BOYS 58, CASS 50
In action at the Lafayette High School Christmas tournament, the Colonels lost a semifinal matchup with the Warren Central Dragons from Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Warren Central led by one after a low scoring first quarter and held a ten point edge at the intermission, 31-21. The lead was nine after three quarters and the Dragons held on in the final period for the eight point win.
Junior guard, Ziyan Millikin, led Warren Central with 22 points that included six threes. Darrell Bowman added 12 points for the Dragons who advanced to the Lafayette tournament finals.
Cass (4-7) got 16 points from Mike Sims and 14 from Ashton Burley. Noah James 7, C.J. Bennett 6, Matt Mundy 6, and Jaquez Mills 1 rounded out the Colonels’ scoring.
The Colonels play Trion Wednesday at 5:30pm in the third place game at Lafayette.
JACKSON-ATLANTA BOYS 81, CARTERSVILLE 65
The Jackson-Atlanta Jaguars improved to 7-4 with a Tuesday night win over the Canes at the Pickens Christmas Tournament in Jasper.
T.J. Horton scored 14 points for Cartersville to go with three assists, a rebound, a steal, and a blocked shot. Jaylon Pugh followed with a dozen points with three rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals. Kobie Whitfield (3 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl) and Cade Archer (1 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl) also reached double figures with ten points each.
Other contributors for the Canes: Cortney Cooley (8 pts, 1 ast, 4 stl), Travon Davis (6 pts, 1 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Tiamon Pennymon (2 pts, 2 reb), Isaac Gridley (2 pts, 1 reb, 1 ast), Kameron Whitfield (1 pt, 2 reb, 1 ast), and Jkobe Orr (2 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl).
Cartersville (7-2) wraps up play at the Pickens tournament Wednesday at 4:30pm against Woodstock.
