Athletes Beyond Bartow update: Bearden's personal best currently leads nation following opening


Updates on local collegiate athletes in track and field, swimming, wrestling, and basketball making an impact in their respective programs.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

MILES BEARDEN — (shown in photo) Kansas State University (Jr., Jumps, Cartersville, GA, Darlington HS) … currently has the best high jump performance in the nation for the 2015-16 NCAA indoor season at 7 feet, 1.75 inches (2.18m). Bearden made the personal best jump at the KSU Winter Invitational in Manhattan, KS on Sat. Dec. 12.


Wildcats’ teammate Thillna Karunaratne placed second in the high jump at the KSU Invitational with a jump of 6 feet,10.75 inches (2.10m). The two teammates also currently have the top two jumps of the indoor season in the Big 12.


Nationally, four athletes are tied for second in the indoor season with jumps of 7 feet, 0.5 inch (2.15m) from various other meets. Those include Branden Greene (Mississippi), Eric Moore (Central Arkansas), Taylor Smith (Air Force), and Collin Scheer (Colorado State).


KSU will host the Wildcat Invitational Sat. January 9 and will host the Deloss Dodds Invitational Fri./Sat. Jan. 22-23.

WOMENS BASKETBALL


SYDNEY BOYD — Brewton Parker (G, Freshman, Woodland HS) … saw action in the Lady Barons’ 73-58 home loss to Thomas University Nov. 30. Boyd has averaged almost six minutes per game in six games. She is averaging 4.8 points per game and 1 rebound. BPC (3-7) will host Southeastern University Mon. Dec. 14 and open Southern States Athletic Conference play at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, MS January 2.


KAELYN IRBY — Gadsden State CC (G, Sophomore, Cartersville HS) … scored 21 points to help lead GSCC at Chattahoochee Tech Dec. 9, 93-72. Irby was 8 of 11 from the floore and 3 of 5 from behind the arc. It was her fifth game in double figures. She is averaging 15 points per game through the first eight games. She had 10 rebounds, five assists, and three steals vs. Chatt Tech also. Irby tallied 8 points to go with six rebounds, a steal, and an assist in a 60-59 home win over Wallace-Selma CC Saturday. Gadsden State CC hosts Walters State Dec. 17 and travels to Roane State CC Dec. 18. GSCC is 4-4 on the season.


MARISSA DUBOSE — Gadsden State CC (F/C, Sophomore, Woodland HS) … scored 7 points on 3 of 5 shooting from the floor in a 93-72 win at Chattahoochee Tech Dec. 9. Dubose also had 4 rebounds, a steal, and three blocks against Chatt Tech. She had a pair of rebounds and an assist in a 60-59 win Sat. Dec. 12 over Wallace-Selma. Gadsden State CC hosts Walters State Dec. 17 and travels to Roane State CC Dec. 18. GSCC is 4-4 on the season.


MORGAN JONES — Gadsden State CC (C, Sophomore, Cartersville HS) … scored six points and two rebounds in a 93-72 victory at Chattahoochee Technical CC Dec. 9. She made only one shot, but had six rebounds, a steal, and a blocked shot in a 60-59 win over Wallace State-Selma CC Sat. Dec. 12. Gadsden State CC hosts Walters State Dec. 17 and travels to Roane State CC Dec. 18. GSCC is 4-4 on the season.



MENS BASKETBALL


A.J. MOSBY — Chattahoochee Tech CC (PG/SG, Sophomore, Cartersville HS) … scored 13 points with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals in a 99-72 home win over Gadsden State CC Dec. 9… totaled 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist as the Golden Eagles won 74-66 at Central Georgia Tech Sat. Dec. 12. CTCC (12-1 overall, 2-0 GCAA) returns to action Jan. 2 and 3 vs. BC Howren and Summer Hill Post Grad in Cartersville. The Eagles return to GCAA play Jan. 6 when they host Gordon State CC in Marietta.


RYAN DAVIS — Chatthoochee Tech CC (G, Sophomore, Cartersville HS) … scored 14 points with 10 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and a blocked shot in a 99-72 win Dec. 9. The Golden Eagles also won 74-66 at Central Georgia Tech Sat. Dec. 12. Davis scored 16 points, pulled down 5 rebounds with 4 assists and 3 steals. CTCC returns to action Jan. 2 and 3 vs. BC Howren and Summer Hill Post Grad in Cartersville. The Eagles (12-1 overall, 2-0 GCAA) return to GCAA play Jan. 6 when they host Gordon State CC in Marietta.


COREY TOBIN — Chattahoochee Tech CC (G, Sophomore, Cartersville HS) … had 9 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocked shots, and a steal in the Golden Eagles’ 99-72 win Dec. 9 over Gadsden State CC. Tobin scored 13 points Sat. Dec. 12 as the Golden Eagles won 74-66 at Central Georgia Tech. He added 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and a pair of steals in the conference win. CTCC (12-1 overall, 2-0 GCAA) returns to action Jan. 2 and 3 vs. BC Howren and Summer Hill Post Grad in Cartersville. The Eagles return to GCAA play Jan. 6 when they host Gordon State CC in Marietta.


WRESTLING


EVAN COLE — Cumberland University (Sophomore, 149 Wt. Class, Cartersville HS) … was 2-2 at the 9th annual Newberry Duals Sun. Dec. 13. The Bulldogs were 3-1 on the day with wins over Coker, Truett-McConnell, and Brewton Parker. Cumberland lost to host Newberry. Next, they wrestle Jan. 8-9 at the NWCA National Duals in Ft. Wayne, IN.


JACOB MAY — Brewton-Parker College (Sophomore, 141 / 149 Wt. Class, Woodland HS) … defeated his Newberry College opponent 10-5 Sunday, Dec. 13 at the Newberry Duals… also suffered a loss to his Cumberland University opponent Dec. 13… lost his match as the Barons lost to St. Andrews College 33-18 Dec. 5 in Laurenburg, NC. BPC also faced Allen University in the tri-meet. Brewton-Parker competes in the Midwest Classic Dec. 19-20 in Indianapolis, IN.
