Woodland takes Etowah Duals crown

The Woodland Wildcats wrestling team captured a championship Tuesday at the Etowah Duals. The defending Class 5A state runner-up Wildcats won preliminary round matches over Lumpkin County (50-18), Harrison (61-9), and River Ridge (78-6) to reach the semifinals.


In the semifinals, Woodland topped Northwest Whitfield 53-25 before edging Gilmer 36-33 in the championship match.


Several Woodland grapplers finished the Etowah tournament undefeated, including Gavin Nix, Kyle Gollhofer, Jahvar Lewis, Spencer Cooper, Cody Cochran, Joseph Jones, Jacob Frye, and Raekwan Hicks.


Woodland will host Cass next Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 6pm in the "Pin Down Cancer" Dual. All of the proceeds from the match of county rivals will go to benefit Woodland teacher, Cathy Lorenz, who is battling cancer. Admission is $5 and additional donations may be made.
