Updates on local collegiate athletes in cross country, soccer, and volleyball making their impact in their respective programs.

CROSS COUNTRY

Jaison Morning — Valdosta State University (Freshman, Cass HS) Morning has already established himself as one of the top runners for the Blazers. He was second for his squad in the first two cross country meets of his college career (at Tampa University and at the University of Florida) and led Valdosta State on Sept. 25 in the Moc Invitational at Florida Southern. He was 15th overall among 80 runners and finished the 8K course with a time of 27:54.20.

Roger Herrera — Reinhardt University (Junior, Cartersville HS) On Sept. 4, set the Reinhardt program record for the fastest time in a 6K when he ran a time of 20:52 at the Dalton State Invitational. He led the Eagles Saturday to a narrow, two point win over University of West Georgia and the rest of the field at the SCAD-Atlanta Invitational. Herrera placed third overall with a time of 28:38 on the 8K course.

Savannah Hardin — Young Harris College (Freshman, Cass HS) .... 16th with a 5K time of 21:31 at the Eye Opener Invitational in her first college race on Sept. 4. Two weeks later, Hardin finished sixth on her team in the 6K North Georgia Invitational with a time of 27:05. She then ran the same time at the Bulldog Stampede at Wingate University on Sept. 26.

Spencer Fields — Rhodes College (Freshman, Kingston, GA; Darlington) ... placed second on his team in each of the first three meets. He placed fifth overall at the Sewanee Invitational with an 8K time of 26:32. He then raced at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis on Sept. 26 and finished ninth overall with a time of 26:22. This past weekend, he ran a 26:13 at the Greater Louisville Classic.


SOCCER


Cody West — Duquesne University (R-Sophomore, Cass HS) ..... played all 90 minutes and took one shot in both matches last week at Saint Francis and against Dayton.

Stephanie Hicks — Agnes Scott (Senior, Woodland HS) ... took four shots, two on goal, in a win at Wesleyan Saturday. Mallory Hedden -- Troy University (Sophomore, Cass HS) ... saw defender time in a 1-0 victory over University of Louisiana Monroe Oct. 2 as the Lady Trojans improved to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the Sun Belt Conference.



VOLLEYBALL

Katie O’Connor — Western Carolina University (Sophomore, Cartersville HS) .. had two kills and a block in a Sept. 30 match against Furman . . . . . also had two kills in eight attempts Saturday against North Carolina Greensboro.

Sydney Sumners — Shorter University (Freshman, Adairsville HS) ... played a set and recorded a dig in a Sept. 30 match at West Alabama.

Karlee Winecoff — Point University (Senior, Cass HS) ... had a kill, four digs and three blocks in a match against Bryan College Friday. . . . . had six kills, 14 digs and a block against Truett-McConnell.
