‘Canes legacy locker program seeks former players, supporters

Cartersville head football coach Joey King and the Cartersville Football Boosters have a new drive program started to increase awareness in current and future players of the history and tradition their own locker room represents. “The greatest part of this job is the opportunity to develop relationships and opportunities,” King said recently on the Bartow Sports Zone coaches show on AM1270 WYXC. “There are high expectations at Cartersville and some people may see that as a tough thing, but I tell our players all the time — those who feel pressure are those who are not prepared. We want to revert back to our training in those tough situations. That’s why we train the way we do,” claimed the coach. King knows those expectations come with the background, history, and tradition of the program he took over a season ago.

“We’re trying to tap back into the people who laid the foundation for our current program through a new Locker Legacy program,” said King. “Former players can have their name, number, and graduation year permanently placed in a locker that our current players are using. We want our current players to be reminded daily of those who came before them,” added the head coach. “We want our players to understand there are a lot of people who are responsible for the foundation they are standing on.”

King also invited supporters in the community to reach out and get involved. “We can always use manpower,” noted King. “Folks can get involved with anything from the paint crew to the Touchdown Club. We have lots of opportunities for involvement.”

Cartersville is conducting two-a-day practices Saturday (Aug. 1) and Monday (Aug. 3). With school beginning next week, coach King and the ‘Canes will transition into typical ‘after school’ practices as they prepare for a pre-season scrimmage at Woodland August 14. The Hurricanes open the 2015 season on the road at Cass on August 28.

Bartow Sports Zone and AM1270 WYXC will broadcast that game live from Cochran Stadium at Cass with coverage beginning at 7pm.
