  • GHC softball loses first two conference games

    March 15, 2025 Former Cass Colonel Haylee Dishmon had two hits in Game 1 of the Chargers' doubleheader on Friday at Gordon State. Georgia Highlands softball lost both games of a doubleheader on Friday in Barnesville, falling to the Gordon State Highlanders 7-1 and 7-2 in conference action. Gordon led 6-1 after three innings in the opener and outhit GHC twelve to six. Hayden Joyner (2.2 IP, 6R, 5ER, 10H, 2BB, 2K) and Grace Kendrick (3.1 IP, 1ER, 0H, 1BB) shared the Game 1 pitching duties for the Chargers. Haylee Dishmon (double), Ahmani Green (RBI), and Abbi Hall (double) had two hits each for Georgia Highlands. In the second game on Friday, the host Highlanders scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and held off the Chargers. Gordon College pitcher Riley Haley scattered three hits and one walk in a seven-inning complete-game performance. She struck out four. NOTE: All Game 2 offensive details for GHC were unavailable at the time of this release. Gordon College improved to 10-16 overall and 4-0 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. Georgia Highlands (19-9, 0-2) plays a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Wallace State-Hanceville CC.

  • Chargers split Saturday doubleheader at East Georgia State

    March 15, 2025 The Georgia Highlands College Chargers split a baseball doubleheader at East Georgia State on Saturday. They won the first game 7-3 before losing the second game 9-7. GHC rolled up seven runs in their first five offensive frames of the opener, and pitchers Andrew Arnold (5.2 IP, 3R, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 1K) and Nickolaus Kane (1.1 IP, 0R, 2H) limited the Bobcats’ offense. Kenskey Thomas (double, four RBI) and Ali Banks (two RBI) combined for five hits at the top of the Chargers’ order to pace the offense. Grayson Godbee added two hits and one RBI. Wyatt Gatlin, Tyler Phillips, and Heath Whitlock (double) added one hit for GHC. The Chargers scored five runs in the top of the first inning of Game 2 and held a 6-5 lead through three innings, but East Georgia State scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and added a two-run homer in the fifth en route to a 9-7 win and a doubleheader split. Braxton Wade (1.1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1K) suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers in relief of starter Kaiden Krak (2.2 IP, 5R, 4ER, 5H, 3BB, 2K). Jackson Greer (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) and Garrett Goblish (1 IP, 0R, 1H) pitched the fifth and sixth innings for GHC. Thomas stayed hot at the plate with three hits and one RBI. Godbee produced two hits, including a homer and three RBI. Bishop (two RBI), Banks, Whitlock, Ryan Martin, and Joe Johnson added one hit in the loss. East Georgia State is 17-14 overall and 3-3 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association following Saturday’s split. The Chargers (24-5, 5-2) play at Andrew College on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and will host three more games with the Tigers on Friday and Saturday.

  • Five local soccer teams notch region wins on Friday night

    March 15, 2025 Cartersville's Daniel Millian The girls' teams at Adairsville, Cartersville, and Woodland earned region wins Friday night, along with the boys' teams at Adairsville and Cass. WOODLAND GIRLS 5, CASS 0 The Woodland Lady Cats posted three goals in the first half and added two more in the second to win at Cass Friday night, 5-0. Ansley Burns scored all five goals for the Wildcats, including one from the penalty spot in the 36th minute. Maddie Weightman assisted on the first goal five minutes into the match and the final goal in the 61st minute. Jackie Arias was credited with an assist in the 24th minute, and Sammie Espinoza assisted on the second half's first goal in the 47th minute.  Woodland (3-5, 2-2) will host Northwest Whitfield on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in a non-region match. Cass (1-7, 1-3) will host Cedartown in a region match on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. CASS BOYS 0, WOODLAND 0 (Cass wins PKs) Cass won an intense defensive showdown with Woodland Friday night at Cochran Stadium to remain unbeaten in Region 7-AAAA. Both teams created opportunities during the match but failed to break a 0-0 deadlock through regulation and two mandatory overtime periods in a region match. Wildcats’ goalkeeper Jaime Lozano made key saves in the contest, as did Colonels’ goalkeeper Saul Villela.  A stop by Villela in the ninth round of penalty kicks secured victory in sudden death. Cass converted seven out of nine kicks from the spot compared to six by Woodland. Colonels’ coach Justin Fitzgerald commended center-back Francisco Martinez for his exceptional play in the match, “He anchored a resilient backline that held firm all night.” The loss dropped Woodland to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in Region 7-AAAA. The Wildcats will step outside region play on Tuesday to host Northwest Whitfield at 7:30 p.m. Cass (6-3, 4-0) hosts Cedartown on Tuesday in a 7:30 p.m. start. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 5, CEDARTOWN 1 Mallory Nicklas takes a pass from MaryBeth Hackney. Kiley McMichael scored a hat trick of three goals Friday night at Cedartown and added an assist on another score, helping the Lady Canes win a Region 7-AAAA match, 5-1. Ella Grace Beaver opened the scoring with her first goal of the season. Mallory Nicklas added one goal and assisted on three. The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in region play. Cartersville (2-5, 2-2) visits Ringgold on Monday for a non-region match with the Tigers at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Canes return to region play at Southeast Whitfield on Friday. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 8, LAFAYETTE 0 Addi Jerauld Addi Jerauld and Ella Edwards scored two goals each as the Adairsville Lady Tigers won at the LaFayette Ramblers on a windy Friday night, 8-0. The Adairsville girls scored four times in each half, with six different Lady Tigers finishing off goals. Samantha Gough scored unassisted in the 17th minute to put the Lady Tigers up 1-0. Five minutes later, Alivia Joslin finished off an assist from Alexa Damer for a 2-0 lead.   Edwards scored the following two goals before the intermission. The first was unassisted in the 29th minute, and the next was off an assist from Braylynn Martin in the 39th minute. Damer scored two minutes into the second half off a feed from Gough, and fifteen minutes later, Jerauld found the net on a deflection to give the Lady Tigers a 6-0 advantage. Ansley Standley scored unassisted in the 64th minute, and Jerauld finished off a corner kick by Ella Edwards in the 77th minute to finalize the scoring. “Our passing has really improved,” noted Adairsville assistant coach Amanda Jones. “Victoria Loudon and Emma Edwards played very well defensively. Sam Gough and Addi Jerauld did some good work tonight as well. We feel like we are in a good place heading into a critical week of region games (Gilmer and Heritage). The girls are confident, and they are healthy.” The loss dropped LaFayette to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in Region 7-AAA. The Lady Tigers (7-1, 2-1) visit Gilmer on Tuesday. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 3, LAFAYETTE 1 The Tigers scored a first-half goal and were up 1-0 at the intermission before finishing off the host Ramblers in the second half with two goals to win 3-1. Fletcher Silvers scored in the 13th minute off an assist from Carlos Limónes for Adairsville's halftime lead. In the second half, Juan Amnesty scored off an assist from Kyden Silverberg, and Limónes sealed the victory in the 51st minute off a helper from Greg Munoz. Charlie Potter had 15 saves in the net for the Tigers. "The team played as a cohesive unit," said Adairsville coach Jason McGuire, "and worked well together in all three game phases." The loss dropped LaFayette to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (4-4, 1-2) travels to Ellijay on Tuesday to take on the Gilmer Bobcats in another region match. CEDARTOWN 4, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 3 The host Bulldogs led 2-1 at halftime and matched second-half goals with the Purple Hurricanes  Friday night to defeat Cartersville 4-3. Cedartown remained undefeated on the season at 7-0 overall and 3-0 in Region 7-AAAA. Cartersville (1-5, 0-4) has a non-region match at Ringgold on Monday with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Hurricanes return to region action on Friday at Southeast Whitfield.

  • Hurricanes and Wildcats complete series sweeps

    March 14, 2025 Cartersville and Woodland completed region series sweeps on Friday night. The Purple Hurricanes swept a doubleheader at Cass to complete a three-game series sweep and Woodland completed the same task at home against Southeast Whitfield. In Ellijay, the Adairsville Tigers dropped the rubber game of their region series with Gilmer. GAME 1: CARTERSVILLE 5, CASS 3 GAME 2: CARTERSVILLE 18, CASS 3 Nolan Elrod Cartersville baseball won both games of a doubleheader at Cass Friday night and completed a three-game series sweep of the Colonels. In Game 1, Cartersville scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed, winning 5-3. The Hurricanes took advantage of five hits, including two infield hits, to take a 4-0 lead. The Colonels responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to cut the Canes’ lead in half. Zach Stiles hit a leadoff double and later scored on a groundout. Nic Wright drove in the second Cass run with a high-hopping single into left field.  Landon Lamb The following five innings went scoreless before both teams added a run in their final frame. Thomas Peters’ RBI double gave Cartersville a 5-2 lead in the top of the seventh and Cass scored a run in the bottom of the inning on a groundout by Hunter Lovett. Nate Russell (5 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 1BB, 7K) started on the mound and earned the pitching win for Cartersville. Logan Shrewsbury (2 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB, 3K) pitched the final two innings. Jacob Johnson (4 IP, 4ER, 7H, 3BB, 8K) was the losing pitcher for the Colonels. Dustin Wallin (3 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 3K) pitched in relief. Nolan Elrod (two RBI) and Brayden Logan (RBI) had two hits for the Canes. Julez Pratt (RBI), Peters (double, RBI), Andrew Purdy (double), Tristan McKibben, and David Vargas (double) contributed one hit.  Andrew Purdy launches one of his three hits Friday against Cass. The Alabama commit homered, doubled, singled, walked four times, scored three runs, and drove in three runs,. Landon Lamb and Wright had two hits for the Colonels. Stiles (double) and Johnson had one hit, and Lovett was credited with one RBI. In the series finale, Cartersville scored ten runs in the top of the first inning to take charge. The Hurricanes added six more runs in the fourth inning and closed out the fifth with two more. The Colonels scored their three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cartersville took advantage of eight first-inning walks, a hit batsmen, two hits, and a two-run home run by Purdy to build a 10-0 advantage.  Cass used two hits, two walks, and an infield error to score three runs in the inning but then went quietly the rest of the way. Avery Shiflett (3 IP, 3R, 1ER, 2H, 4BB, 5K) made the pitching start for the Hurricanes. Maddox Frazier (1 IP, 3K) and Brady Kerlin (1 IP, 2K) tossed one inning of relief. Five pitchers took the mound for Cass. Tatum (0.1 IP, 7ER, 1H, 6BB), Jay Sheldon (0.0 IP, 3R, 2ER, 2H, 2BB), Wright (2.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 3K), Lamb (1 IP, 6R, 5ER, 3H, 3BB), and Trenton Elario (1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K) pitched for the Colonels. Purdy had two hits, including his homer and three RBI. Cole (two RBI), Peters (two RBI), Logan (RBI), McKibben (two RBi), Pratt (RBI), and Clint Hosea added one hit. Vargas and Asa Mitcham drove in one run. Wright (RBI), Elario (RBI), Lovett, and Stiles had one hit for Cass. Cartersville (8-7, 4-2) opens a region series on Tuesday at Hiram. Cass (7-7, 2-4) hosts Cedartown on Tuesday to begin their series. GAME 1: WOODLAND 10, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 1 GAME 2: WOODLAND 16, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 6 Woodland baseball completed a three-game series sweep Friday night at home, defeating the Southeast Whitfield Raiders 10-1 and 16-6. The Wildcats carried a 4-2 lead into the sixth inning in the opening game of Friday night’s doubleheader and sealed their win with a six-run frame. Woodland sent eleven men to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored six runs on four hits, three walks, and a Raiders’ error. Kallen Reynolds (4 IP, 1R, 0ER, 4H, 3BB, 5K) made the pitching start for the Wildcats and picked up the win. Austin Daves (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 3K) and Grant Tidwell (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) pitched in relief.  Preston Sorrells had four hits with one RBI to lead the Wildcats’ attack. Conner Lujan (triple, double, two RBI) and Alfredo Romo (triple, RBI) contributed two hits. Jonathan Ryan (RBI), Zaylen Cochran (RBI), Ben Turcotte (double), and Jake Clowers (double) added one hit. Lucas Baker drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. In Game 2, the Wildcats overcame three first-inning runs by the Raiders by scoring in five of six offensive frames including six runs in the bottom of the first. Baker (5 IP, 3R, 1ER, 4H, 1BB, 7K) picked up the Wildcats’ pitching win in relief of starter Christian Duran (1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K).  Ryan (two RBI) and Cochran (RBI) led Woodland’s 15-hit attack with three hits each. Sorrells (triple, three RBI), Lujan (triple, three RBI), Baker (double, sac fly, three RBI), and Clowers (two sac flies, three RBI) produced two hits. Romo added one hit, and Tommy Risner had one RBI. The two losses left the Raiders with a 4-11 record overall and 1-5 in Region 7-AAAA. Woodland (10-4, 4-2) starts the next region series on Tuesday at 7th-ranked Allatoona. GILMER 7, ADAIRSVILLE 4 The Adairsville Tigers outhit Gilmer ten to nine Friday night but lost in Ellijay, 7-4. Adairsville led 2-0 midway through the third inning and was ahead 4-2 in the middle of the sixth before the host Bobcats scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.  Gilmer utilized three hits and two walks and took advantage of a hit batsman and two Tigers’ errors to plate their five runs in the sixth. Jarrett Scott (4 IP, 1ER, 4H, 1BB, 3K) made the pitching start for Adairsville without a decision. McCayden Hufstetler (1.1 IP, 4R, 3ER, 4H, 1K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Hudson Parr (0.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 1H, 2BB) retired the final two outs in the sixth inning. Peyton Bowen (RBI), Braxton Ryan (double, RBI), and Jack Nelson had two hits for the Tigers. Scott (RBI), Ethan Long, Harrison Cole, and Evan Hardin added one hit. Gilmer won two of three games in the series with the Tigers and improved to 5-8 overall. The Bobcats are 2-4 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (7-6, 2-4) host LaFayette on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. to begin their next region series.

  • Chargers fall in conference semifinals

    March 14, 2025 The Georgia Highlands College men’s basketball team was eliminated in the semifinals of the GCAA conference tournament Friday night at South Georgia State, 70-57. The top-seeded Hawks led 34-21 at halftime and held off the Chargers in the second half. Justin McCarter led South Georgia State with 19 points and 18 rebounds. Ashton Pennamon added 13 points for the Hawks. Cameron Baldwin paced Georgia Highlands with 25 points and 13 boards. Jah’kim Payne scored 15 points and added eight rebounds. South Georgia State will play East Georgia State on Saturday for the conference tournament title. Georgia Highlands finishes the season with an 18-12 record.

  • Cass and Adairsville track & field teams compete at Calhoun

    March 13, 2025 The Cass boys were second, the Cass girls placed third, and the Adairsville boys finished fourth at a five-way track and field meet hosted by Calhoun High School on Wednesday. Gilmer (122) won the girls’ meet, followed by Calhoun (105), Cass (67), Southeast Whitfield (50), and Adairsville (23). Calhoun (137) won the boys’ meet, followed by Cass (89), Southeast Whitfield (68), Adairsville (54), and Gilmer (34).   • Hurricanes win at Kennesaw Mountain and Model

    March 13, 2025 Alex Hampton hands off to Bayley Stanley. The Cartersville track and field teams won a tri-meet at Kennesaw Mountain High School Wednesday evening as they competed for the second consecutive night. On Tuesday, the Cartersville boys won a nine-team meet at Model High School, and the Lady Canes were second to the host Lady Blue Devils in a seven-team competition. At Kennesaw Mountain, the Cartersville girls scored 181 points. Woodstock was second with 156, and Kennesaw Mountain was third with 145. The Canes scored 258 points at Kennesaw Mountain, followed by the host Mustangs with 207 and Woodstock with 97 points. The Cartersville boys won the Model meet with 162.5 points. The hosts, Blue Devils (150) and Rome (91), rounded out the top three. The Lady Canes finished 66 points behind Model, with Cherokee County (AL) placing third and seven points behind Cartersville.   • Nelson tosses a no-hitter for Adairsville; Wildcats defeat Dominion Christian

    March 12, 2025 Jack Nelson After dropping the first game of the series on Tuesday at Gilmer, the Adairsville Tigers easily dispatched the Bobcats at home on Wednesday, 15-0, in four innings behind pitcher Jack Nelson’s no-hitter. Nelson faced only two batters over the minimum (two walks) and struck out five. The Tigers posted seven runs in the bottom of the first inning as the first seven batters reached base. Jarrett Scott hit a two-run homer in the inning and Adairsville had half of the game’s base hits in the frame.  Brody Varner (two RBI), Ethan Long (two RBI), and Nelson had three hits. Peyton Bowen (two RBI), Braxton Ryan (RBI), Isaac Burnett (RBI), and Hayden Miller (RBI) added one hit. Scott contributed three RBI. Evan Hardin and Matthew Cook added one RBI each. Adairsville (7-5, 2-3) concludes the three-game region series at Gilmer (4-8, 1-4) on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. WOODLAND 9, DOMINION CHRISTIAN 2 Lucas Baker had three hits, drove in three runs, and pitched a scoreless inning Wednesday evening to help lead the Woodland Wildcats to a 9-2 non-region win over visiting Dominion Christian. Woodland scored in five of six offensive frames and produced a dozen hits in the victory. Austin Daves (1.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 4K) started on the bump for the Wildcats, struck out four of the eight batters he faced, and was credited with the pitching win. Zaylen Cochran (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 1K), Grant Tidwell (2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 1K), Baker (1 IP, 0R, 1H), and Kallen Reynolds (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) pitched in relief. Conner Lujan (double, RBI) also had three hits for the Wildcats. Ben Turcotte finished with two hits, including a double. Alfredo Romo (RBI), Jake Clowers, Eduardo Romo, and Tommy Risner added one hit. Preston Sorrells drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. With the loss, the Knights slipped to a 5-3 record. Woodland (8-4, 2-2) returns to Region 7-4A action on Friday with a home doubleheader against Southeast Whitfield.

  • GHC baseball wins two at Gordon State

    March 12, 2025 Kenskey Thomas Georgia Highlands baseball swept a conference doubleheader at Gordon State on Wednesday afternoon defeating the host Highlanders 19-7 and 4-3. The Chargers built a big early lead in the opening game and outhit Gordon State 18 to eight. GHC led 14-1 in the middle of the fourth inning. Kenskey Thomas had four hits in Game 1, including two home runs, one double, and 10 RBI to lead the way. Max Eichenberger (4 IP, 6ER, 8H, 2BB, 2K) started Game 1 and was credited with the pitching win. Reece Robertson (3 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 0BB, 1K) did not allow a hit or a walk over the final three innings on the mound. Game 2 was much tighter. The Chargers broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth inning and held off the Highlanders in the bottom of the seventh. A home run narrowed the GHC lead to 4-3 and Gordon State had the potential winning run at the plate with one out, but Hunter Ward induced a ground ball that was turned into a double play to end the threat. Jack Butler (5.1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 7H, 0BB, 5K) made the start and picked up the pitching win for Georgia Highlands. Jackson Greer (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) and Ward (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB) retired the final five outs. Ali Banks had five hits in the doubleheader, including one home run, one double, and three RBI. Grayson Godbee (three doubles, one RBI) and Ryan Martin (two RBI) finished the day with four hits. Tyler Phillips (home run, two RBI) and Caden Marcos (double, RBI) contributed three hits. Andrew Bishop hit a solo home run and Ian Fullerton had a triple in Game 2.  The two losses dropped Gordon to 11-14 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Georgia Highlands (23-4, 4-1) has a conference doubleheader at East Georgia State on Saturday at 1 p.m.

  • Chargers' softball swept at Chattanooga State

    March 12, 2025 Georgia Highlands College softball lost both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday at Chattanooga State CC, falling 8-2 and 6-0. In Game 1, the Chargers led 2-1 through two innings but the host Tigers took the lead for good with a five-run third inning. Hannah Mounce (3.1 IP, 4ER, 3H, 0BB) was tagged with the GHC pitching loss in the opener in relief of starter Grace Kendrick (2 IP, 4ER, 4H, 1BB, 1K). Ahmani Green (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) retired the final two outs in the sixth. In Game 2, Chattanooga State hurler Olivia Steinorth shutout the Chargers with a two-hitter. She struck out eleven. Green (6 IP, 6ER, 9H, 0BB) was the pitcher of record for GHC. Abbi Hall had three hits for the Chargers in the doubleheader. Hayden Joyner had one hit with one RBi. Mary Catherine Kimball and Green added one hit. Athens Hudson contributed one RBI. Chattanooga State improved to 19-6 and completed a four-game season sweep of the Chargers. Georgia Highlands (19-7) begins Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference play on Saturday at Gordon State in a doubleheader slated for a 1 p.m. start.
