  • Chargers softball extends win streak to five

    March 29, 2025 The Georgia Highlands College softball team extended its winning streak to five games on Saturday with two GCAA conference wins at East Georgia State. The Chargers won the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader 10-2 and captured the second game 12-5. Hayden Joyner went the distance in the circle to collect the pitching victory in the opener. She went all seven innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while recording seven strikeouts. Maci Andrews (1.2 IP, 4R, 0ER, 3H, 1BB) started the second game, and Athens Hudson (5.1 IP, 1ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K) entered in the second inning and finished the game in the circle. Emmalee Freeman (four doubles, four RBI), Abbi Hall (two doubles, triple, two RBI), and Emma Darrow led the Chargers’ offense with five hits. Faith Gauthier (three RBI) and Mary Catherine Kimball (double, two RBI) finished the doubleheader with three hits. Hailey Love contributed two hits. Ahmani Green (double, two RBI), Haylee Dishmon (double), and Joyner added one hit. Hudson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Abbey Yates had one RBI. East Georgia State slipped to 5-21 overall and 2-6 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association’s conference standings. GHC (24-12, 3-3) will host a conference doubleheader with Andrew College on Saturday at 2 p.m.

    March 29, 2025 Grace Kendrick was the winning pitcher in the first game of Friday's doubleheader at South Georgia State. Georgia Highlands College softball won both games of a conference doubleheader at South Georgia State on Friday. The Chargers won 10-3 and 11-4 in Waycross. In the opening game, GHC pitcher Grace Kendrick (7 IP, 3ER, 7H, 1BB, 3K) went the distance in the circle. Hurlers Athens Hudson (2.2 IP, 3R, 2ER, 6H, 1BB, 1K) and Maci Andrews (4.1 IP, 1ER, 4H, 3BB, 1K) combined in Game 2. Emma Darrow led the Chargers’ offense with six hits in the doubleheader. Abbi Hall (triple, double, two RBI), Emmalee Freeman (three doubles, three RBI), and Hayden Joyner (double, two RBI) had four hits. Faith Gauthier (RBI) and Mary Catherine Kimball contributed two hits. Abbey Yates (three RBI), Ahmani Green (double, RBI), Haylee Dishmon (RBI), and Andrews added one hit.   • Canes complete sweep of Woodland; Colonels sweep Southeast Whitfield

    March 28, 2025 Cartersville and Cass completed three-game region series sweeps on Friday night, while Adairsville lost the third game of the Tigers’ region series with Heritage-Catoosa. GAME 1: CARTERSVILLE 7, WOODLAND 0 GAME 2: CARTERSVILLE 15, WOODLAND 0 Andrew Purdy had six hits and four RBI in Friday's doubleheader sweep of Woodland. The Purple Hurricanes’ pitching staff was dominant Friday night as Cartersville hurlers limited the Woodland Wildcats to no runs and only three hits in a Region 7-AAAA doubleheader. Cartersville completed a three-game series sweep of Woodland, winning 13-3 on Tuesday, plus 7-0 and 15-0 on Friday. Nate Russell (4 IP, 0R, 2H, 3BB, 8K) and Brady Kerlin (3 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K) combined to shut out the Wildcats in the opening game on Friday.  Avery Shiflett (3 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 4K), Davis Waddell (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 1K), and Maddox Frazier (1 IP, 3K) combined to strike out seven of 17 Woodland batters in Game 3 of the series. Alabama commit Andrew Purdy paced the Hurricanes’ offense in the doubleheader with six hits and four RBI. GAME 1: CASS 17, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 2 GAME 2: CASS 14, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 4 Nic Wright had five hits, three RBI, and stole ten bases in Friday's doubleheader sweep of Southeast Whitfield. The Cass Colonels cruised to a home doubleheader sweep of Southeast Whitfield Friday night and completed a three-game series sweep of the Raiders. The Colonels outhit Southeast twenty-two to six and took advantage of eight errors and eleven walks. Cass also stole twenty-four bases in the two games. Jake Johnson (3 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K) was the winning pitcher for Cass in the opening game. Nic Wright (2.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 3K) collected the pitching win in Game 2.  Jay Sheldon (4 IP, 2ER, 1H, 4BB, 5K) closed out the first game and started Game 2 on the mound. Chase Tatum (0.1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K) also pitched in the nightcap. Wright led the Colonels' offense with five hits in the doubleheader and three RBI. He also stole 10 bases. Trenton Elario followed with four hits, including one double and five RBI.  Tatum had three doubles and five RBI. Zach Stiles finished the two games with three hits, including one triple, one double, and four RBI. Hunter Lovett (double, two RBI) and Sheldon (two RBI) had two hits on the night. Dustin Wallin (two RBI), Dawson Warner, and Johnson (double) added one hit. Landon Lamb swiped eight bases. Lovett had four steals, and Joey Kane stole two bases. The losses dropped Southeast Whitfield to 4-17 overall and 1-11 in Region 7-AAAA. The Raiders have lost nine straight and 13 of their last 14. Cass (10-10, 5-7) starts a three-game series at region-leading Allatoona on Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. The Colonels will host a doubleheader with the 6th-ranked Buccaneers on Friday. HERITAGE 4, ADAIRSVILLE 3 Ethan Long For the second night in a row, Adairsville and Heritage-Catoosa went to extra innings, but on Friday night, the Generals came out on top and walked off with a 4-3 victory. The two teams went to an extra inning tied 2-2. Adairsville scored two runs in the top of the fourth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Jarrett Scott and Jack Nelson. Heritage tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on three singles and a groundout. Scott smacked a solo homer in the top of the eighth that gave the Tigers a 3-2 advantage, but the Generals won the game with a walk and back-to-back, two-out RBI singles in the bottom of the inning. Hudson Parr (6 IP, 2R, 1ER, 6H, 1BB, 5K) made the pitching start for Adairsville, but Scott (1.2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 3K) was tagged with the pitching loss in relief. Ethan Long, Scott (two RBI), and Nelson (RBI) had two hits for the Tigers. Braxton Ryan, Isaac Burnett, and Kaiden Coker added one hit. The Generals improved to 13-7 overall and 7-2 in Region 7-AAA by salvaging the series' final game. Adairsville (12-7, 7-5) begins a three-game region series with LaFayette on Tuesday at home at 5:30 p.m.

  • Lady Canes qualify for the state playoffs with a win over Woodland; Wildcats blank Canes

    March 28, 2025 Woodland's Libby Morgan (13) navigates traffic as Cartersville's Helen Leaming (15) and Layla Morgan (16) defend in Friday's match at Weinman Stadium. The Cartersville Lady Canes upended visiting Woodland 2-1 Friday night at Weinman Stadium to earn the No. 4 seed from Region 7-AAAA in the upcoming GHSA state playoffs. Scout Hullander (17) scored the Lady Canes' go-ahead goal in the second half. Following a scoreless first half, the visiting Lady Cats grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the second half. Sammie Espinoza scored the goal for Woodland off an assist from Liby Morgan. Cartersville responded less than four minutes later with an equalizer by Mallory Nicklas off a corner. Lexi Fennelly However, the Lady Canes broke the deadlock in the 60th minute on a goal by Scout Hullander. Lexi Fennelly assisted on the go-ahead goal. The Cartersville girls improved to 5-6 overall and finished 4-3 in region matches. The Lady Canes will begin preparations for the state playoffs on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. on their home pitch against Model. Woodland falls to 4-8 overall and finished 3-4 in region action. The Lady Cats have four non-region matches remaining on the schedule, beginning at Gordon Central on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. WOODLAND BOYS 2, CARTERSVILLE 0 The Wildcats scored goals in each half Friday night at Cartersville’s Weinman Stadium to finish their region schedule with a 2-0 victory. Aiden Carrillo found the net for Woodland in the 28th minute off an assist by Deiby Sanchez. That goal gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at halftime. Connor Henderson added a final insurance goal for Woodland in the final minute assisted by goalkeeper Jaime Lozano. Cartersville (3-7) finished the Region 7-AAAA slate with a 1-6 mark. The Hurricanes have four non-region matches remaining, beginning at home on Tuesday against Model at 7:30 p.m. Woodland (3-10) also finished region play with a 1-6 record. The Wildcats play a non-region match at Gordon Central on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

  • Lady Tigers fall at Allatoona

    March 27, 2025 The Adairsville girls' soccer team stepped outside of Region 7-AAA play on Thursday night to challenge the Class 4A Lady Buccaneers of Allatoona. The Lady Tigers lost 9-1 but head coach David Sexauer was pleased with how his team responded. “I was impressed with the team’s composure. They proved that the stage wasn’t too big and they were able to rise to the level of an intimidating team.” Allatoona, the 2024 Class 4A state runner-up, led 5-0 at halftime. The lone Adairsville goal was scored by Alivia Joslin in the 52nd minute off an assist from Sam Gough. “The challenge was good for us,” added Sexauer. “We need to face competition like this to help make us better and prepare us for the playoffs.” Allatoona improved to 12-1 overall. The Lady Bucs were 7-0 in Region 7-AAAA. Adairsville (9-3) will host Pepperell in another tune-up for the playoffs on Tuesday. KELL 9, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0 The host Longhorns improved to 3-8 on the season with a 9-0 home win over Adairsville on Thursday night in Marietta. Adairsville (5-7) hosts Pepperell in another non-region match on Tuesday.

  • Tigers walk it off versus Generals

    March 27, 2025 Isaac Burnett had two hits Thursday night in the Tigers' walk-off win over Heritage-Catoosa. It took an extra inning, but the Adairsville Tigers won a back-and-forth Region 7-AAA struggle with visiting Heritage-Catoosa on Thursday night, 7-6. The Tigers led 3-0 after one inning on an RBI single by Jack Nelson and a two-run home run by Braxton Ryan, but the Generals scored two in the second, two in the third, and one more in the top of the fifth inning to build a 5-3 lead. RBI singles by Nelson and Brody Varner knotted the score at 5-all in the bottom of the fifth inning. Following a scoreless sixth inning, Heritage regained the lead in the top of the seventh on an Adairsville throwing error. However, the Tigers answered in the bottom of the inning on Harrison Cole’s RBI infield single. The Generals failed to score in the top of the eighth, and Nelson’s RBI double in the bottom of the inning forced home the Tigers’ walk-off run. McCayden Hufstetler (3.2 IP, 4R, 2ER, 2H, 4BB, 3K) made the pitching start for Adairsville. Kaiden Coker (4 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H, 3BB, 6K) took the mound in the fourth inning and pitched into the eighth. Jarrett Scott (0.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) was credited with the pitching win after retiring the final out in the top of the eighth. The Tigers outhit the Generals eighteen to five. Nelson led the offense with four hits, including one double and four RBI. Ryan (home run, two RBI), Varner (double, RBI), Cole (RBI), Isaac Burnett, Peyton Bowen, and Scott contributed two hits. Ethan Long and Hudson Parr added one hit. Adairsville (12-6, 7-4) heads to Ringgold on Friday to complete the region three-game series with Heritage-Catoosa (12-7, 6-2).

  • Cartersville golfers win North Georgia Invitational

    March 27, 2025 The Cartersville boys golf team won the eight-team North Georgia Invitational on Thursday. The 36-hole event's opening round was held at Fields Ferry Golf Club in Calhoun on March 13. Thursday's final round was hosted at The Farm in Rocky Face. Cartersville's 36-hole total was 591. Dalton finished second at 601, and Mill Creek placed third with a 636 total. Senior Andrew Lutjens led the way for the Hurricanes with rounds of 70 and 74. Sophomore Bodie Brumlow (75-70), freshman Reid Henson (73-73), and freshman Ramsay Dunn (74-82) rounded out the counting scores for Cartersville. The Canes' next event is the North Paulding Wolfpack Invitational, which will take place on Monday at Creekview Golf Club.

  • Local baseball professionals prepare for 2025 season

    March 27, 2025 (L-R) Former Cartersville Purple Hurricanes Mason Barnett, Logan Martin, and Anthony Seigler Two of the three local baseball professionals will begin the 2025 season this weekend with new assignments and in new organizations. Mason Barnett, Logan Martin, and Anthony Seigler were all standouts at Cartersville High School and each will embark on their respective 2025 campaigns as Minor League Baseball schedules begin.  Barnett, beginning his fourth season as a professional, was traded from the Kansas City Royals organization in the off-season to the Oakland Athletics organization. After receiving an invitation to Spring Training with the MLB club and making two appearances in Cactus League games, Barnett was assigned this week to begin 2025 with the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators. Seigler, beginning his eighth season as a professional, was picked up in free agency by the Milwaukee Brewers organization in the off season. He spent the first seven years of his career in the New York Yankess organization. Seigler was also a special invitee to Spring Training and appeared in games with the MLB club. Earlier this week, he was assigned to open the 2025 season with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds. Martin is the only local professional returning to his 2024 club. The right-hand pitcher, drafted in 2023, will begin the year again with the Royals’ Single-A affiliate Columbia Fireflies in South Carolina.   • Wildcats drop non-region match with Wolfpack

    March 26, 2025 The Woodland boys' soccer team lost 2-0 to visiting North Paulding in a non-region match on Wednesday evening. The Wolfpack (8-5) scored a first-half goal in the 20th minute and added a second-half insurance goal in the 44th minute. Woodland (2-10, 0-6) has a Region 7-AAAA match at Cartersville on Friday.

  • Colonels win series opener at Southeast Whitfield

    March 26, 2025 Zach Stiles had three doubles and three RBI at Southeast Whitfield Wednesday night. Cass baseball's first game of this week’s three-game series with Southeast Whitfield was pushed back 24 hours due to a shortage of umpires on Tuesday, but the Colonels' bats were ready in a 9-1 win in Dalton. Cass scored five runs in the top of the second inning and added on late to secure their victory. The early runs were enough for pitchers Hunter Lovett (5 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 9K) and Nic Wright (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 1K), who combined to scatter four hits and compiled ten strikeouts. Zach Stiles led the Colonels’ offensive attack with three doubles and three RBI. Dustin Warner (double, RBI) and Wright (triple) had two hits. Landon Lamb (RBI), Lovett (RBI), and Trenton Elario contributed one hit. Chase Tatum drove in one run. Hunter Lovett struck out nine in five innings and earned the pitching win for Cass at Southeast Whitfield. The Raiders fell to 4-15 overall and 1-9 in Region 7-AAAA.
