The Cartersville Hurricanes’ baseball club made a profound statement in Game 1 of their Class 4A quarterfinal series at Wayne County Wednesday afternoon (May 13). The ‘Canes routed the host Yellow Jackets 12-1 to open the Elite 8 series. Cartersville struck for a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning, got a three-run homer from Trent Frazier in the fifith, and put the game away with six more runs in the seventh to blast the Wayne County Yellow Jackets 12-1 in Game 1 of the Class 4A quarterfinal series between the two schools. ‘Canes freshman pitcher, Anthony Siegler, scattered three hits, one walk, and struck out six to earn a complete game victory. The lone Wayne County run scored in the bottom of the seventh and was unearned. Frazier tallied six RBI in Game 1 on three hits and a walk to ignite the Hurricanes’ offense. Jacob Fowler also had three hits and one RBI. Devin Warner and Parker Tidwell (RBI) added a pair of hits, while Lane Wilson (2 RBI) and Carrington Evans (RBI) added a hit apiece. Game 2 of the series is set to begin at approximately 4:10pm Wednesday. The winner of the best-of-three series will host Buford in the state semi-finals next week. Buford swept Locust Grove on Tuesday, 10-0 and 8-5. The other semi-final will feature Whitewater -- who swept North Hall Tuesday 8-2 and 10-1 -- against the winner of the Veterans vs. St. Pius X series that concludes with a third game Wednesday. After almost six hours of delays and only 2 and a half innings of baseball Tuesday night in Jesup, the Class AAAA quarterfinal series opener between Cartersville and Wayne County was cancelled. The series is now reset to start over again. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Wednesday, May 13 starting at 1 pm. A rubber game -- if needed -- will be played on Saturday, May 16. Cartersville held a 2-0 lead after the opening inning on an Elliott Anderson homerun, but multiple rain delays extended deep into the evening and GHSA officials washed out the game just before 10 pm. The innings played will be wiped out and Game 1 will be restarted from the beginning. The Georgia Dugout Club's Class AAAA preseason top two -- Buford and Whitewater -- advanced to the state semifinals Tuesday night. Buford swept Locust Grove 10-0 and 8-5. Whitewater swept North Hall. St. Pius X and Veterans split in their Class AAAA quarterfinal series. Former University of Georgia and Cass High School football star, Richard Samuel, once again is bringing his instructional football camp to Cartersville and Bartow County. The camp will be held July 23-25 at Hamilton Crossing Park. The cost is $65 per child and each camper will receive over two hours of individual skills and fundamentals coaching each day. The camp is designed for ages 8-12 and will be conducted from 9:30am to noon each day.

There are now more than ten different proposals for the Georgia High School Association to consider as they prepare for the next round of reclassification of schools. The Reclassification Committee met for the third time Monday, May 11 in preparation for the Fall 2015 reclassification cycle. Cartersville’s opponent in the next round of the 2015 Class AAAA state baseball playoffs was extended to a third game in their second round series, but the Region 3-AAAA champions survived and advanced. Wayne County pitcher J.D. Paul carried the Yellow Jackets through that series tossing two complete games. Paul went the full seven innings in a 4-1 victory in Game 1 and then continually escaped trouble the next day in Game 3 for a 3-1 series clinching win. Troup won the middle game of the series, 3-2. In Game 3, Troup totaled nine hits, but left a lot of runners in scoring position. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the third inning when Wayne County struck for their deciding three runs. Paul, Brooks Parker, and Hunter Roberson each had a pair of hits in the series clincher for Wayne County. Parker, Roberson, and Chase Hinson drove in the Jackets’ runs. The Yellow Jackets (21-8) will host Cartersville in the GHSA Class AAAA quarterfinals Tuesday, May 12 (doubleheader). If the teams split games Tuesday, the best-of-three series will conclude Wednesday, May 13. That game is also scheduled for Jesup. The winner of the Cartersville/Wayne County series will advance to the Class 4A semifinals and will host the survivor of the Locust Grove/Buford series May 18-19. Two Cass track and field athletes reached the finals of the Class 5A shot put competition at the 2015 Girls Track and Field State Championships. Hayley Gildersleeve placed fourth with a distance of 38 feet, 9.5 inches. Lady Colonels’ teammate Chapelle Clemons placed fifteenth at 33 feet and 7 inches. Timberly Molden of Stephenson High School won the event at 43 feet, 1.5 inches. Megan Douglas of Union Grove was second at 41 feet 8.25 inches and Brianna Sims of Winder-Barrow was third at 39 feet, 9.25 inches. The 2015 Girls Track and Field State Championships conclude Saturday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

The Georgia Highlands baseball team finished the regular season strong, qualified for the final conference playoff spot, and even knocked off Georgia Perimeter College in their opening game of the 2015 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. That hot streak, unfortunately, came to a close Thursday (May 7) with a pair of tournament losses. Coach Mike Marra’s Chargers fell to the tournament losers’ bracket with a 4-1 loss to South Georgia and were later eliminated from the post season by West Georgia Tech 4-2. The Chargers season ended with a 26-26 record. Host Darton State and South Georgia remained the only unbeaten teams in the tournament heading into Friday (May 8). Those two play the opening game of the day with the winner advancing to the conference finals on Saturday. West Georgia Tech and ABAC remain alive in the losers’ bracket and would each need to win four more elimination games to take the conference crown.

Anna Hightower of Cartersville High School won the 2015 Girls Class AAAA state pole vault title today (May 7) with a winning vault of 11 feet, 7 inches. Her vault not only bested runner up, Bria Caesar, of Marist who cleared 10 feet, but established a new state record. Anne Marie Simoneaux, also from Marist, and Sydney Holmes of Chamlee tied for third with vaults of 9 feet, 6 inches. In other action at the Girls Georgia Olympics, Adairsville High School had two competitors in the Class AAA State finals. Emily Sexauer placed tenth in the 3200 meter run and Josie Summerville placed 15th in the shot put. The 2015 Girls State Track and Field Championships continue through Saturday, May 9 at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

The 2015 GHSA Girls Track and Field State Championships begin today (May 7) through May 9 in Albany. Local state qualifiers include a pair of athletes from Adairsville High School and one from Cartersville High School. Josie Summerville and Emily Sexauer will represent the Tigers. Summerville will compete in the shot put. She qualified with a throw of 32 feet, 2 inches. Teammate, Emily Sexauer qualified for the 3200 meter run with a time of 12:48.87. Anna Hightower will represent the Lady ‘Canes in the state pole vault finals. She qualified with a vault of 11 feet. The GHSA Track and Field State Championships are being held at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.
