  • Tigers pound Panthers to even region mark

    March 20, 2025 Harrison Cole had two hits and four RBI in Adairsville's win over Ridgeland on Thursday. The Adairsville Tigers only needed three innings Thursday night to put away the visiting Ridgeland Panthers, 15-0, in the second game of their three-game Region 7-AAA series. The Tigers dominated the Panthers' pitching with fourteen hits, capitalized on five walks, and exploited four errors to secure a run-rule victory.  McCayden Hufstetler made the pitching start and completed all three frames on the mound. He scattered two hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Harrison Cole (four RBI), Peyton Bowen (three RBI), Jarrett Scott (double, RBI), Isaac Burnett, and Hudson Parr had two hits. Jack Nelson (sac fly, two RBI), Braxton Ryan (two RBI), Ethan Long (RBI), and Brody Varner added one hit in the win. The loss dropped Ridgeland to 7-7 overall and 0-5 in region play. Adairsville (9-6, 4-4) wraps up the three-game series on Friday at Ridgeland.

  • Local athletes shine in track & field meets

    March 20, 2025 Track and field athletes from Cartersville, Cass, and Woodland competed Wednesday evening in the 12-team Allatoona Buccaneers Meet in Acworth, with several locals finishing in the top three. The host Colts won the boys’ team event with 74 points, followed by Adairsville with 53 and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe with 48 points. The Lady Colts scored 75 points, with LFO finishing at 56 and Adairsville at 30 points.   • Canes top Calhoun and Woodland to win tri-match at CCC

    March 19, 2025 Andrew Lutjens On Tuesday, the Cartersville boys' golf team defeated Calhoun and Woodland in a nine-hole tri-match at Cartersville Country Club. Cartersville totaled 149, followed by Calhoun with 162 and Woodland at 202. Andrew Lutjens carded a 1-under-par 35 to lead the Hurricanes. He was followed by Reid Henson (37), Carter Rice (38), and Noah Pogue (39) in the scoring column. Addie Feuerbach Allatoona secured victory in the girls' quad match with a total score of 133, counting three scores. Calhoun took second place with 145, the Lady Canes came in third with 150, and Woodland finished fourth with 174. Two freshmen, Addie Feuerbach (49) and Macie Mosteller (50), led the Cartersville girls. The Lady Canes will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday at the Junior PGA Esther Cannizo event at Bentwater Golf Club. The Canes will play in the Chris Kirk Classic at Eagle Watch on Tuesday and Round 2 of the North Georgia Invitational at The Farm on Thursday.

  • Lady Tigers win region match at Gilmer

    March 18, 2025 Alexa Damer In a key Region 7-AAA matchup, the Adairsville girls' soccer team won 4-0 at Gilmer on Tuesday night. Alexa Damer scored the first half's only goal in the 21st minute and added another goal and an assist in the second half to lead the Lady Tigers' attack. Braylynn Martin assisted on the first-half goal in the 21st minute and scored herself in the 42nd minute off an assist from Greer Cofield to give Adairsville a 2-0 lead.  Braylynn Martin Damer followed eight minutes later, finishing a feed from Ella Edwards, and Addi Jerauld closed out the scoring off an assist from Damer in the 77th minute. Adairsville coach David Sexauer credited center backs Victoria Loudon and Emma Edwards for anchoring the middle and stopping waves of Gilmer attacks, “They both made key plays in one-on-one situations, used their speed and their defensive skills. Sam Gough had another great defensive game as well.” The loss dropped the Lady Bobcats to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (8-1, 3-1) travels to Ringgold on Friday to take on Heritage-Catoosa in another region match. GILMER 5, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0 The Adairsville Tigers were shutout at Gilmer Tuesday night, 5-0. The Tigers trailed 1-0 at halftime, but the Bobcats rallied in the second half to win the match comfortably. Gilmer improved to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (4-5, 1-3) plays at Heritage-Catoosa on Friday at 7 p.m. CEDARTOWN 1, CASS BOYS 0 Visiting Cedartown won a defensive battle at Cass Tuesday night, 1-0. The Bulldogs (8-0, 4-0) scored the game’s only goal in the second half. Cedartown and Dalton remain the two unbeaten teams in Region 7-AAAA. Cass (6-4, 4-1) visits Allatoona on Friday for a 7:45 p.m. kickoff. Allatoona also dropped its first region match on Tuesday night at Dalton.

  • Canes, Tigers secure region victories

    March 18, 2025 The Adairsville Tigers and Cartersville Purple Hurricanes secured region victories on Tuesday night, while the Woodland Wildcats and Cass Colonels suffered challenging region defeats at home. ADAIRSVILLE 10, RIDGELAND 5 Kaiden Coker tossed three scoreless innings of relief Tuesday in the Tigers win at Ridgeland. The bottom third of the Tigers lineup combined for five hits and four RBI Tuesday night in a 10-5 Region 7-AAA win at Ridgeland. Braxton Ryan had two doubles, a sacrifice fly, and two RBI; Isaac Burnett finished with two hits and one RBI; and Hayden Miller contributed an RBI double in the bottom three spots of the Adairsville batting order. The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning and added three more in the second on a home run by Jack Nelson. The Panthers narrowed their deficit to 6-4 in the bottom of the second inning, and the score was 7-5 through three innings, but the Tigers’ bullpen stymied Ridgeland over the final four innings. Nelson (3 IP, 5R, 2ER, 5H, 3BB, 5K) collected the pitching victory with a three-inning start, but it was Kaiden Coker (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 5K) and Ethan Long (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 2K) who closed out the final four frames without allowing a run. Long was credited with a save.  Brody Varner (RBI), Peyton Bowen, and Long (triple) added one hit in the Tigers’ win. The loss dropped Ridgeland to 8-6 overall and 0-4 in region play. Adairsville (8-6, 3-4) hosts the Panthers on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., and the series will conclude with a third game on Friday in Rossville at 5:30 p.m. CARTERSVILLE 15, HIRAM 0 Tristan McKibben drove in three runs for the Canes at Hiram. Cartersville pitchers Andrew Purdy and Maddox Frazier combined for a five-inning no-hitter Tuesday at Hiram, and the Hurricanes overpowered the Hornets 15-0. The Canes led 5-0 through three innings, added a run in the fourth inning, and nine in the top of the fifth to wrap up the victory. Purdy started on the mound for the Hurricanes and struck out 10 in the first four innings. He issued two walks. Frazier walked one and fanned three in his inning on the bump. Nolan Elrod (two RBI), Tristan McKibben (three RBI), and Purdy (home run, double, sac fly, two RBI) had two hits for the Canes. Cameron Cochran (two-run homer), Julez Pratt (double, three RBI), and Brayden Logan (RBI) added one hit. David Vargas and Cole Crawford produced one RBI. The loss dropped the Hornets to 7-9 overall and 2-5 in Region 7-AAAA. Cartersville (9-7, 5-2) hosts a doubleheader with Hiram on Friday at 5 p.m. DALTON 5, WOODLAND 2 The Woodland Wildcats led 2-0 through five innings Tuesday night, but the visiting Dalton Catamounts sent the game to extra innings by scoring two runs in the top of the sixth, Following three scoreless frames, Dalton struck for three runs in the top of the tenth inning to escape with a Region 7-AAAA win. Lucas Baker (3 IP, 2ER, 2H, 2BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for the Wildcats in relief of starter Austin Daves (6 IP, 2ER, 4H, 3BB, 8K). Kallen Reynolds (1 IP, 1ER, 1H) entered in the final inning. Jonathan Ryan (RBI), Conner Lujan (double), Preston Sorrells, and Zaylen Cochran had one hit each for Woodland. Alfredo Romo reached base three times by base on balls and added one RBI. Dalton improved to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in region play. Woodland (10-5, 4-3) travels to Dalton on Friday for a series-concluding doubleheader at 5 p.m. CEDARTOWN 11, CASS 8 The visiting Bulldogs grabbed a 7-0 lead through two innings Tuesday evening at Cass and held on to defeat the Colonels in the first game of their three-game series this week, 11-8. Gavin Allred hit a first-inning grand slam to launch the Cedartown offense and take advantage of three early walks. The Bulldogs then added three runs in the second inning on three hits, a walk, and an error. The Colonels chipped into the Cedartown lead to trail 7-3 through four innings and narrowed the gap to 9-8 heading into the final inning. However, the Bulldogs secured their win with two unearned runs in the top of the seventh — both scoring on an infield error with two outs. Dustin Wallin (3 IP, 7R, 4ER, 5H, 5B, 1K) made the pitching start for Cass and was tagged with the loss. Nic Wright (2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB) and Jay Sheldon (2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 3H, 1K) pitched in relief. Wallin contributed two hits on offense with one RBI. Trenton Elario, Sheldon, and Wright added one hit. Hunter Lovett and Jacob Johnson were credited with one RBI. Cedartown (6-10, 3-4) will host Cass (7-8, 2-5) in a doubleheader on Friday at 5 p.m.

  • Andrew College powers past Chargers in series opener

    March 18, 2025 Georgia Highlands baseball held a 5-1 lead in the middle of the third inning Tuesday at Andrew College in Cuthbert. However, the host Tigers exploded for 15 runs in their subsequent four offensive frames to power past the Chargers 16-8. The bats of Andrew College delivered 20 hits, featuring 10 extra-base hits, with three being home runs. Ryan Martin had two hits, including a homer for the Chargers. Andrew Bishop (two RBI) and Heath Whitlock also homered. Wyatt Gatlin (double), Grayson Godbee (double), and Tyler Phillips (sac fly, RBI) added one hit.  Six Chargers pitched in the loss, including starter Jack Butler (3 IP, 6ER, 9H, 0BB, 3K), Braxton Wade (1.2 IP, 5R, 3ER, 6H), Nickolaus Kane (0.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K), Reece Robertson (1 IP, 5ER, 3H, 4BB, 1K), Brodie Chestnutt (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K), and William Homan (1 IP, 0R, 2H, 1K). The Tigers improved to 22-9 overall and 4-3 in the GCAA. Georgia Highlands (24-6, 5-3) will proceed with the week-long series against Andrew College, which will feature a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.

  • Chargers drop two at Wallace State-Hanceville

    March 18, 2025 Faith Gauthier had a hit in each game on Tuesday at Wallace State-Hanceville. Georgia Highlands softball dropped both games of a doubleheader Tuesday at Wallace State-Hanceville CC by an identical 8-0 score. The Chargers and Lions went scoreless in the opening game through three innings before Wallace State scored one run in the fourth, five in the fifth, and two more runs in the sixth. Georgia Highlands managed only two hits in Game 1. Emma Darrow tripled to start the Chargers' fourth inning and was stranded. Faith Gauthier began the top of the sixth inning with a double. Game 2 was similarly close through three innings, but the Lions broke it open with a three-run fourth inning and three runs in the sixth. Athens Hudson, Hailey Love, Raeghan Thompson, Darrow, and Gauthier had one hit each for GHC in the second game. Hayden Joyner (4.2 IP, 6R, 5ER, 6H, 2BB, 5K) and Grace Kendrick (0.2 IP, 2ER, 2H) shared the Chargers’ pitching duties in the opener. Hudson (3 IP, 4R, 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K), Maci Andrews (1.1 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1BB), and Hannah Mounce (1.1 IP, 3ER, 4H, 1BB) pitched in Game 2.  The Lions improved to 25-6 this season. Georgia Highlands (19-11) returns to conference play on Saturday at home against Georgia Military College.

  • Cartersville soccer teams win at Ringgold; Woodland falls to Bruins

    March 17, 2025 Annabelle Williams (shown here in an earlier game vs. Allatoona) The Cartersville girls’ soccer team built a 4-0 lead by halftime and scored four more goals in the second half to win at Ringgold Monday night, 8-2. Annabelle Williams opened the scoring for the Lady Canes with an assist credited to Kiley McMichael. Mallory Nicklas followed with back-to-back goals for a 3-0 advantage. Mary Beth Hackney assisted on one of the Nicklas goals. Freshman Allie Evans scored her first career goal before the break off an assist from Nicklas. The Tigers narrowed the margin to 4-1 early in the second half, but a quick answer from Hackney gave Cartersville a 5-1 lead. McMichael scored the Lady Canes’ next two goals off assists from Hackney and Alexis Henderson to make the score 7-1. Nicklas found the net again, assisted by Hackney for an 8-1 lead, and the Hurricanes conceded a final goal in the 79th minute for an 8-2 final score. The loss dropped Ringgold to 1-8 on the season. Cartersville (4-5, 2-2 Region 7-4A) visits Southeast Whitfield on Friday at 5:30 p.m. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 2, RINGGOLD 0 Following a scoreless first half, the Hurricanes scored to goals in the second half to win a non-region match Monday night at Ringgold, 2-0. The loss dropped the host Tigers to 5-4 on the season. Cartersville (2-5, 0-4) returns to Region 7-4A action on Friday at Southeast Whitfield in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 7, WOODLAND GIRLS 3 The Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins won a non-region soccer match at Woodland Monday night, 7-3. The Woodland girls scored first and only trailed 2-1 at the intermission, but the visiting Bruins scored five goals in 21 minutes to take control. Sammie Espinoza put the Lady Cats up 1-0 in the 6th minute off an assist from Ansley Burns. Northwest Whitfield answered with goals in the 24th and 30th minutes to lead 2-1 at halftime. Espinoza opened the second half scoring in the 47th minute off a delivery from Carlie Forman, but the Lady Bruins scored five consecutive goals to lead 7-2. Burns added a Woodland goal in the 68th minute, with Espinoza providing an assist. Northwest Whitfield improved to 6-2 on the season. The Lady Cats (3-6, 2-2) return to Region 7-4A action on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at home against Hiram. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 3, WOODLAND BOYS 0 The visiting Bruins improved to 9-0 Monday night with a 3-0 win at Woodland. Northwest Whitfield led 1-0 at halftime, scoring on a penalty kick. In the second half, the Bruins scored in the 44th minute and added an insurance goal in the 56th minute off a corner kick to round out the scoring. Former Woodland High School wrestlers Caleb Henson and Jaxon Smith enter the 2025 NCAA Division I Championship as top seeds beginning Thursday in Philadelphia. A Virginia Tech junior, Henson is the No. 1 seed in the 149-pound weight class. Smith, a redshirt junior at the University of Maryland, is the No. 8 seed in the 184-pound division. This week’s update includes pro basketball, MLB spring training, collegiate beach volleyball, tennis, golf, softball, and baseball highlights. CHINA CBA — PRO BASKETBALL ASHTON HAGANS — Xinjiang Flying Tigers (6th yr. pro; Cartersville native; University of Kentucky; Newton HS) … the Flying Tigers were 3-1 last week with Hagans, age 25, scoring a total of 33 points with 25 assists, 10 rebounds, and five steals. Xinjiang lost to Guangdong but defeated Shenzhen, Fujian, and Guangzhou. The Flying Tigers play Zhejiang on Tuesday and host Sichuan on Saturday. MLB SPRING TRAINING ANTHONY SEIGLER — Milwaukee Brewers organization (8th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … the 25-year-old infielder appeared as a pinch hitter on March 11, coaxed a walk, and played defensively at second base in a 9-7 win over the Chicago Cubs. JA’KA’YAH DRAUGHN — Chattanooga State CC (So., Cartersville HS) … scored 11 points with four rebounds and three assists in a 60-55 win over Columbia State CC on March 10. She scored 17 points with one rebound, one steal, and one assist in a 58-49 loss to Walters State CC. Both games were at the NJCAA Region VII Tournament.   • GHC softball loses first two conference games

    March 15, 2025 Former Cass Colonel Haylee Dishmon had two hits in Game 1 of the Chargers' doubleheader on Friday at Gordon State. Georgia Highlands softball lost both games of a doubleheader on Friday in Barnesville, falling to the Gordon State Highlanders 7-1 and 7-2 in conference action. Gordon led 6-1 after three innings in the opener and outhit GHC twelve to six. Hayden Joyner (2.2 IP, 6R, 5ER, 10H, 2BB, 2K) and Grace Kendrick (3.1 IP, 1ER, 0H, 1BB) shared the Game 1 pitching duties for the Chargers. Haylee Dishmon (double), Ahmani Green (RBI), and Abbi Hall (double) had two hits each for Georgia Highlands. In the second game on Friday, the host Highlanders scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and held off the Chargers. Gordon College pitcher Riley Haley scattered three hits and one walk in a seven-inning complete-game performance. She struck out four.
