- Woodland and Cass track and field teams compete at Dalton Rotary Invitational
March 22, 2025 Woodland and Cass's track and field teams competed on Saturday at the Dalton Rotary Invitational, which was hosted by Dalton High School. The Woodland girls placed eighth, and the Cass girls tenth in the 16-team invitational. The Cass boys placed ninth, and Woodland placed fourteenth. Model won the girls’ title, followed by Heritage-Catoosa, Hiram, Kell, and Sonoraville. Kell won the boys’ team title, followed by Heritage-Catoosa, Sprayberry, Hiram, and East Paulding. - GHC baseball wins series with Tigers
March 22, 2025 Georgia Highlands College baseball bounced back from a series-opening loss at Andrew College this past Tuesday by sweeping the Tigers in all three games played at Bentley Field on the GHC campus on Friday and Saturday. The Chargers won 22-7 on Friday and took both games of a Saturday doubleheader 8-5 and 10-5. Max Eichenberger (4 IP, 5R, 4ER, 3H, 5BB, 6K) and Nickolaus Kane (3 IP, 2ER, 5H, 0BB, 3K) split the pitching duties for Georgia Highlands on Friday. Andrew Arnold (6 IP, 3ER, 5H, 2BB, 4K) picked up the pitching win in the first game on Saturday. Jackson Greer (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 1BB, 2K) closed out the final inning for the Chargers. Kaiden Krak (5.2 IP, 4ER, 10H, 0BB, 3K) was the winning pitcher in Saturday’s second game. William Homan (0.1 IP, 1ER, 3H) and Hunter Ward (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) retired the final four outs. The Chargers rattled off 17 hits on Friday, led by Ryan Martin (four RBI) and Ian Fullerton (three RBI) with three each. Two of the three hits by Martin were home runs. Tyler Phillips also hit two homers with three RBI. Caden Marcos (two RBI) and Kenskey Thomas (three RBI) had two hits, including one homer each. Andrew Bishop contributed two hits. Grayson Godbee (home run, three RBI), Wyatt Gatlin (double, three RBI), and Ali Banks (triple, RBI) added one hit on Friday. In Saturday’s doubleheader sweep, the Chargers had 16 more hits. Banks paced the offense with four hits, including one double and four RBI. Thomas followed with three hits, including one home run and five RBI. Fullerton (double, four RBI) and Marcos (double) finished Saturday with two hits. Anthony Miller (triple, RBI), Martin (double, RBI), Godbee (RBI), Joe Johnson, and Bishop contributed one hit. The losses on Friday and Saturday left Andrew with a 22-12 record overall and 4-6 in the GCAA. The Chargers (27-6, 8-3) host the Bryan College (TN) JV for a doubleheader on Monday at 2 p.m.

March 22, 2025 Georgia Highlands College softball split a doubleheader Saturday with conference-foe Georgia Military College at Carol Brown Field in Cartersville. The visiting Bulldogs won the opening game 8-1 and the Chargers won the second game 5-4. Mary Catherine Kimball Georgia Military scored six runs in the top of the fifth to break open a tight game in the opener. GHC scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth. All eight runs for the Bulldogs in the opening game were unearned off Georgia Highlands pitching. Hayden Joyner (4.2 IP, 7R, 0ER 9H, 1BB) was charged with the pitching loss for GHC. Grace Kendrick (2.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 1K) retired the final seven outs in the circle. In Game 2, the Chargers trailed 1-0 in the early innings but scored two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to grab a 5-1 advantage. Georgia Military rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh, but GHC pitcher Athens Hudson induced two flyouts and struck out the final batter to extinguish the Bulldogs’ late threat. Hudson (5 IP, 3R, 0ER, 4H, 3BB, 3K) collected the pitching win for the Chargers in relief of Kendrick (2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 3H, 0BB, 1K), who started Game 2 in the circle. Emma Darrow led the Georgia Highlands bats in the doubleheader with three hits, including a double and one RBI. Faith Gauthier had two hits on the day. Joyner (double, two RBI), Mary Catherine Kimball (RBI), Haylee Dishmon (RBI), Abbi Hall, Chloe Fowler, Abbey Yates, and Maci Andrews added one hit. The doubleheader split leaves Georgia Military with a 16-13 record overall. The Bulldogs are 5-1 in conference play. The Chargers (20-12, 1-3) travel to South Georgia State for a doubleheader on Friday and will visit East Georgia State for two games on Saturday.

March 21, 2025 Local high school soccer results for Friday, March 20. WOODLAND GIRLS 10, HIRAM 0 The Woodland girls’ soccer team blanked visiting Hiram Friday night, 10-0. The Lady Cats led 4-0 at the intermission and closed out the contest with six more goals in the second half. Sammie Espinoza started the Woodland scoring with an unassisted goal in the 10th minute. Libby Morgan followed with goals in the 27th and 33rd minutes off assists from Carlie Forman and Maddie Weightman. Espinoza scored her second goal in the 36th minute on a feed from Morgan. Weightman opened the Wildcats’ second half with consecutive goals to make the score 6-0. The first was unassisted in the opening minute of the second half and the second goal finished off a pass from Espinoza. Mogan and Espinoza finished off hat tricks later in the half to give Woodland an 8-0 lead. Brionna Carver and Jackie Arias added goals to end the contest in the 56th minute. Morgan finished wiht three goals and two assists. Espinoza scored three goals with one assist. Weightman scored twice and contributed three assists. Karyme Hernandez had an assist on the goal by Arias. Hiram dropped to 5-6 overall and 0-6 in Regon 7-AAAA. Woodland (3-7, 1-4) plays at Southeast Whitfield on Tuesday and hosts a non-region match with North Paulding on Wednesday. HIRAM 1, WOODLAND BOYS 0 The Hornets and Wildcats played almost 73 minutes in a scoreless tie before Hiram found the net for the game’s only goal. Hiram improved to 6-5 overall and 1-5 in Region 7-AAAA. Woodland (2-8, 0-5) visits Southeast Whitfield on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. ALLATOONA 10, CASS GIRLS 0 The host Lady Buccaneers scored seven first-half goals en route to a 10-0 win over the Cass Lady Colonels. Allatoona improved to 10-1 overall and stayed undefeated in Region 7-AAAA with a 6-0 mark. The Cass girls (1-9, 1-5) travel to Dalton on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. ALLATOONA 3, CASS BOYS 1 The Buccaneeers led 2-1 at the intermission and scored the only goal of the second half to defeat visiting Cass on Friday. Allatoona improved to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in Region 7-AAAA. Cass (6-5, 4-2) travels to region-leading and 2nd-ranked Dalton (11-0, 6-0) on Tuesday. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 3, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 0 The Lady Canes lost at Southeast Whitfield Friday night, 3-0. The Lady Raiders improved to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in Region 7-AAAA. March 21, 2025 The Cartersville Hurricanes and Adairsville Tigers completed three-game region sweeps on Friday while Cass and Woodland were swept by their region opponents. GAME 1: CARTERSVILLE 4, HIRAM 0 GAME 2: CARTERSVILLE 14, HIRAM 0 Nate Russell threw a seven-inning no-hitter Friday and the Purple Hurricanes completed a three-game series sweep of the Hiram Hornets. Nate Russell struck out 15 batters and tossed a seven-inning, no-hitter Friday to blank the Hiram Hornets in the first game of a doubleheader at Richard Bell Field, 4-0. Russell walked three but faced only two over the minimum. Catcher Julez Pratt caught a baserunner trying to steal in the third inning to eliminate one of the baserunners. The Purple Hurricanes' win was the 200th victory in the head coaching career of Kyle Tucker. Cartersville managed only three hits — two by David Vargas and one by Andrew Purdy. In the second game the Hurricanes took advantage of a walk, three hit batsmen, and six base hits to post a 9-0 first-inning lead en route to a 14-0 blanking of the Hornets. Kyle Tucker earned his 200th career coaching win Friday in the Canes' Game 1 victory. Avery Shiflett (4 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 8K) and Davis Waddell (1 IP, 3K) combined on the mound to strike out 11 of 19 Hiram batters. Tristan McKibben (two RBI), Cole Crawford (RBI), and Brayden Logan (double, two RBI) had two hits for the Canes. Vargas (two RBI), Casen Cochran (two RBI), Purdy (double, RBI), and Ben Cagle (double, RBI) added one hit. The losses dropped Hiram to 7-11 overall and 2-7 in Region 7-AAAA. Cartersville (11-7, 7-2) has a three-game region series with Woodland next week. Tuesday’s first game will be at Richard Bell Field at 5:55 p.m. Woodland will host a doubleheader on Friday starting at 5 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE 7, RIDGELAND 0 Hudson Parr recorded five strikeouts and collected the pitching win Friday at Ridgeland. The Adairsville Tigers completed a three-game region series sweep at Ridgeland on Friday with a 7-0 win in Rossville. The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the third inning, two in the fourth, and single runs in the fifth and seventh frames. Hudson Parr (5 IP, 0R, 4H, 4BB, 5K) made the pitching start for Adairsville and picked up the win. Kaiden Coker (1 IP, 2K) and Jarrett Scott (1 IP, 3K) each faced the minimum in the sixth and seventh innings. Isaac Burnett had two hits. Scott (three RBI), Jack Nelson (double, two RBI), Parr (RBI), Coker, Harrison Cole, and Payton Bowen added one hit for the Tigers. Adairsville (10-6, 5-4) plays a three-game series with Heritage-Catoosa next week. The Generals host games on Tuesday and Friday. The Tigers will host on Thursday. All three games are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. GAME 1: CEDARTOWN 4, CASS 1 GAME 2: CEDARTOWN 12, CASS 0 Nic Wright had three hits Friday at Cedartown, but the Colonels dropped both games. Cedartown scored three runs in the second inning and added a run in the fourth to build a 4-0 lead, then held on to defeat Cass in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader 4-1. Trenton Elario doubled to lead off the Colonels’ fifth inning and Zach Stiles drove him home with a double for the only Cass run of the night. Hunter Lovett (6 IP, 4R, 1ER, 8H, 1BB, 3K) went the entire way on the mound for the Colonels and was charged with the opening game pitching loss. Nic Wright had two hits for Cass. Jacob Johnson and Dawson Warner added one hit. In the second game, the Bulldogs broke open a 2-0 game with six runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth to close out the Colonels in five innings. Elario had two hits for Cass. Lovett and Wright added one hit. Jacob Johnson (2.1 IP, 8R, 5ER, 6H, 2BB, 2K) was the starting pitcher for the Colonels and suffered the loss. The Colonels travel to the Raiders’ home field on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. start and will host a doubleheader on Friday with first pitch slated for 5 p.m. GAME 1: DALTON 12, WOODLAND 1 GAME 2: DALTON 6, WOODLAND 2 Conner Lujan The host Catamounts scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 12-1 win in the opening game of a region doubleheader with Woodland on Friday at Dalton. Woodland used three singles and a walk to post a run in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first, Dalton took advantage of an error, a hit batsman, three walks, and three hits to go up 7-1 after one frame. Charles Chappelle homered in the second inning for Dalton and Cain Woods hit a two-run homer in the sixth to end the game. The Wildcats utilized three pitchers in the loss including Zaylen Cochran (0.2 IP, 6R, 0ER, 1H, 3BB, 1K), Christian Duran (1 IP, 2ER, 4H), and Tucker James (3.2 IP, 4ER, 4H, 4BB, 3K). Preston Sorrells, Alfredo Romo, and Ben Turcotte had two hits for Woodland. Lucas Baker drove in the Wildcats’ first inning run with a single. Jonathan Ryan added one hit. In Game 2, Dalton scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and made it 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth. All three of the early runs by the Catamounts were unearned with the Wildcats committing errors in those frames. Woodland took advantage of a Dalton error in the top of the sixth when Conner Lujan drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Baker doubled home another run to narrow the Wildcats’ deficit to 3-2. Dalton answered, however, with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out the Catamounts’ victory. Jake Clowers (4 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 4BB, 6K) was tagged with the pitching loss, but did not allow an earned run. Baker (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 1K) and Grant Tidwell (1 IP, 3R, 1ER, 4H, 1K) pitched in relief. Baker (double, RBI), Lujan (RBI), Turcotte, and Ryan added one hit. With their series sweep, Dalton improved to 15-3 overall and 7-2 in Region 7-AAAA. Woodland (10-7, 4-5) plays a three-game series with Cartersville next week. - Adairsville soccer teams held scoreless at Heritage-Catoosa
March 20, 2025 The Adairsville girls’ soccer team dropped a 1-0 Region 7-AAA decision at Heritage-Catoosa on Thursday evening in Ringgold. Both teams battled the windy and cold conditions in a scoreless first half. The Lady Tigers controlled most of the play and put ten shots on goal. “We had a tough time adjusting our passing game,” said Adairsville assistant coach Amanda Jones. “They have a small and narrow field, and it impacted our passing lanes.” Heritage scored the match's only goal five minutes into the second half, and despite five more shots on goal by Adairsville, the Lady Tigers could not find an equalizer. Jones credited goalkeepers Bethany Kilgore and Chikondi Banda, as well as Alivia Joslin, who contributed both offensively and defensively. The Lady Generals improved to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (8-3, 3-2) host Ridgeland on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. HERITAGE-CATOOSA 5, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0 The host Generals built a 4-0 lead by halftime and defeated the Adairsville Tigers Thursday night in Ringgold, 5-0. Heritage-Catoosa improved to 6-6 overall and 4-2 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (4-6, 1-4) will entertain the Ridgeland Panthers on Tuesday in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

March 20, 2025 Harrison Cole had two hits and four RBI in Adairsville's win over Ridgeland on Thursday. The Adairsville Tigers only needed three innings Thursday night to put away the visiting Ridgeland Panthers, 15-0, in the second game of their three-game Region 7-AAA series. The Tigers dominated the Panthers' pitching with fourteen hits, capitalized on five walks, and exploited four errors to secure a run-rule victory. McCayden Hufstetler made the pitching start and completed all three frames on the mound. He scattered two hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Harrison Cole (four RBI), Peyton Bowen (three RBI), Jarrett Scott (double, RBI), Isaac Burnett, and Hudson Parr had two hits. Jack Nelson (sac fly, two RBI), Braxton Ryan (two RBI), Ethan Long (RBI), and Brody Varner added one hit in the win. The loss dropped Ridgeland to 7-7 overall and 0-5 in region play. Adairsville (9-6, 4-4) wraps up the three-game series on Friday at Ridgeland.

The host Colts won the boys’ team event with 74 points, followed by Adairsville with 53 and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe with 48 points. The Lady Colts scored 75 points, with LFO finishing at 56 and Adairsville at 30 points. - Canes top Calhoun and Woodland to win tri-match at CCC
March 19, 2025 Andrew Lutjens On Tuesday, the Cartersville boys' golf team defeated Calhoun and Woodland in a nine-hole tri-match at Cartersville Country Club. Cartersville totaled 149, followed by Calhoun with 162 and Woodland at 202. Andrew Lutjens carded a 1-under-par 35 to lead the Hurricanes. He was followed by Reid Henson (37), Carter Rice (38), and Noah Pogue (39) in the scoring column. Addie Feuerbach Allatoona secured victory in the girls' quad match with a total score of 133, counting three scores. Calhoun took second place with 145, the Lady Canes came in third with 150, and Woodland finished fourth with 174. Two freshmen, Addie Feuerbach (49) and Macie Mosteller (50), led the Cartersville girls. The Lady Canes will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday at the Junior PGA Esther Cannizo event at Bentwater Golf Club. The Canes will play in the Chris Kirk Classic at Eagle Watch on Tuesday and Round 2 of the North Georgia Invitational at The Farm on Thursday.

March 18, 2025 Alexa Damer In a key Region 7-AAA matchup, the Adairsville girls' soccer team won 4-0 at Gilmer on Tuesday night. Alexa Damer scored the first half's only goal in the 21st minute and added another goal and an assist in the second half to lead the Lady Tigers' attack. Braylynn Martin assisted on the first-half goal in the 21st minute and scored herself in the 42nd minute off an assist from Greer Cofield to give Adairsville a 2-0 lead. Braylynn Martin Damer followed eight minutes later, finishing a feed from Ella Edwards, and Addi Jerauld closed out the scoring off an assist from Damer in the 77th minute. Adairsville coach David Sexauer credited center backs Victoria Loudon and Emma Edwards for anchoring the middle and stopping waves of Gilmer attacks, “They both made key plays in one-on-one situations, used their speed and their defensive skills. Sam Gough had another great defensive game as well.” The loss dropped the Lady Bobcats to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (8-1, 3-1) travels to Ringgold on Friday to take on Heritage-Catoosa in another region match. GILMER 5, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0 The Adairsville Tigers were shutout at Gilmer Tuesday night, 5-0. The Tigers trailed 1-0 at halftime, but the Bobcats rallied in the second half to win the match comfortably. Gilmer improved to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (4-5, 1-3) plays at Heritage-Catoosa on Friday at 7 p.m. CEDARTOWN 1, CASS BOYS 0 Visiting Cedartown won a defensive battle at Cass Tuesday night, 1-0. The Bulldogs (8-0, 4-0) scored the game’s only goal in the second half. Cedartown and Dalton remain the two unbeaten teams in Region 7-AAAA. Cass (6-4, 4-1) visits Allatoona on Friday for a 7:45 p.m. kickoff. Allatoona also dropped its first region match on Tuesday night at Dalton.
