- Colonels win series opener at Southeast Whitfield
March 26, 2025 Zach Stiles had three doubles and three RBI at Southeast Whitfield Wednesday night. Cass baseball's first game of this week’s three-game series with Southeast Whitfield was pushed back 24 hours due to a shortage of umpires on Tuesday, but the Colonels' bats were ready in a 9-1 win in Dalton. Cass scored five runs in the top of the second inning and added on late to secure their victory. The early runs were enough for pitchers Hunter Lovett (5 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 9K) and Nic Wright (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 1K), who combined to scatter four hits and compiled ten strikeouts. Zach Stiles led the Colonels’ offensive attack with three doubles and three RBI. Dustin Warner (double, RBI) and Wright (triple) had two hits. Landon Lamb (RBI), Lovett (RBI), and Trenton Elario contributed one hit. Chase Tatum drove in one run. Hunter Lovett struck out nine in five innings and earned the pitching win for Cass at Southeast Whitfield. The Raiders fell to 4-15 overall and 1-9 in Region 7-AAAA. Cass (8-10, 3-7) will host a doubleheader with Southeast Whitfield on Friday, starting at 5 p.m.
- Cartersville wins tri-match at Chapel Hill Golf Club
March 26, 2025 Carsen Stanfield The Cartersville boys golf team won a nine-hole tri-match on Wednesday at Chapel Hill Golf Club in Douglasville, defeating Carrollton and East Paulding. The Canes carded a 155 total. Carrollton shot 170, and East Paulding scored 201. Ramsay Dunn led Cartersville with a 1-under-par 35. Carsen Stanfield shot an even par 36. Reid Lowry and James Buessing each carded 42. Next for the Hurricanes is Day 2 of the Dalton Tournament at The Farm on Thursday.

- Canes runner-up at Chris Kirk Classic
March 26, 2025 Reid Henson The Cartersville boys’ golf team competed in the Chris Kirk Classic on Tuesday at Eagle Watch Golf Club in Woodstock and finished second in a 12-team field that mainly included Class 5A and 6A teams. Cartersville and Blessed Trinity were the only Class 4A teams in the field. Creekview won the tournament with a 1-under-par 287 total. Cartersville shot 304 to finish as runner-up. Senior Andrew Lutjens led the way with a 2-under 70. Sophomore Bodie Brumlow shot a 76. Freshman Reid Henson shot a 78, and junior Carter Rice rounded out the scoring with an 80. The Canes are back in action on Wednesday at Chapel Hill Golf Club and Thursday at The Farm in Dalton.

The duo, who finished runner-up in 2024, led two teams by six shots following Saturday’s opening round en route to a five-shot win over Trey Broome and Clayton Griffin (69-67). Lee Bowman and Shawn Higgins (70-68) finished third. Taylor Dorner and Mike Hefner (72-68) placed fourth. Robert Brooks and Paul Wielage (69-67) won the Senior 65+ Gold Flight by three shots over David McGinnis and Dennis Bush (72-67). Os Hillman and Ron Hunter (72-71) were third at 1-under par. Dave Coleman and Charles Wilson (72-67) won Players Flight 1, finishing ahead of Hal Lamb and Rick Brown (71-69). Scott Davenport and Mike Cromer (70-72) finished third. Ryan Hulton and Justin McMasters (69-67) cruised to a nine-shot win in Players Flight 2. Alex Jones and Donny Mixon (71-74) were second, followed by Hunter Clary and Jay Rhoten (73-75). In Players Flight 3, Stephen Hopkins and Curt Jolly (73-70) won by three shots over Kevin Parker and Steve Stewart (71-75). David Kellogg and Brody Grinnell (76-71) placed third. Ron Harris and Randy Foster (70-79) won Players Flight 4 by four shots ahead of Steven Hickman and Lee Mitchell (77-76). Mike Ross and Shannon Wehunt (79-79) placed third. The annual tournament included 164 players (82 teams).

March 25, 2025 All eight local high school soccer teams were in action on Tuesday. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 7, RIDGELAND 1 The Lady Tigers built a 5-1 lead by halftime and celebrated their seniors with a 7-1 Region 7-AAA victory over the Ridgeland Panthers. Ella Edwards scored three goals to pace the Adairsville offense. Alexa Damer scored two goals and added one assist. Alivia Joslin and Addi Jerauld also scored goals. Samantha Gough contributed two assists. Greer Cofield and Braylynn Martin added one assist. All 23 Lady Tigers on the roster saw playing time in the victory. Coach David Sexauer commended Jacksyn Elrod's play: “She continues to have good, consistent, and efficient games. Her balance on the ball has improved, and she sees the field well.” On Thursday, Adairsville (9-2, 4-2) plays a non-region match at Allatoona. WOODLAND GIRLS 3, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 1 The Woodland Lady Cats lost at Southeast Whitfield Tuesday night, 3-1. The host Lady Raiders scored first in the 11th minute, but Woodland scored an equalizer with just under ten minutes remaining in the first half. Ansley Burns scored for the Lady Cats off an assist from Libby Morgan. Southeast Whitfield regained the lead in the 53rd minute and added an insurance goal in the 69th minute. The Lady Raiders improved to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in Region 7-AAAA. Woodland (4-7, 3-3) plays at Cartersville on Friday at 5:30 p.m. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 5, HIRAM 0 The Lady Canes improved to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in Region 7-AAAA. Hiram fell to 0-13 overall and 0-7 in region play. Mallory Nicklas scored two goals for Cartersville, and Kiley McMichael, Lundyn Eubanks, and Annabelle Williams each added one goal. Melanie Villela contributed one assist. Cartersville hosts Woodland on Friday at 5:30 p.m. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 4, HIRAM 3 The Canes scored all four goals in the first half and held on for a 4-3 win Tuesday night at Hiram.Hiram dropped to 6-6 overall and 1-6 in Region 7-AAAA. Edgar Abeja score all four goals for the Hurricanes. Cartersville improved to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in region matches. The Canes host Woodland on Friday at 7:30 p.m. to complete region play. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 1, RIDGELAND 1 (Tigers win on PKs) Brock Benefield scored a goal in the 37th minute off an assist from John Mark Shepherd and Tigers’ goalkeeper Charlie Potter made 22 saves in a region match that was decided by penalty kicks. Ridgeland and Adairsville were tied at the intermission and played a scoreless second half and overtime session before the Tigers outscored the Panthers in the penalty kick session. Shepherd, Carlos Limones, Fletcher Silvers, and Cooper Souders converted kicks in the PK portion of the match and Potter blocked two attempts by Ridgeland to secure the win. The loss dropped the Panthers to 1-11 overall and 0-6 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (5-6, 2-4) completes region play as the fifth place team. The Tigers have a non-region match at Kell on Thursday at 8 p.m. DALTON 10, CASS GIRLS 1 Dalton improved to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in Region 7-AAAA with a 10-1 home win over the Cass Lady Colonels. Cass (1-10, 1-6) hosts Carrollton on Monday at 5:30 p.m. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 3, WOODLAND BOYS 0 The host Raiders led 1-0 on a goal in the 16th minute and added two goals in the final four minutes of the match to defeat Woodland 3-0. Southeast Whitfield improved to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in Region 7-AAAA. Woodland (2-9, 0-6) hosts North Paulding on Wednesday and plays at Cartersville on Friday. DALTON 4, CASS BOYS 0 The host Catamounts kept their 2025 record unblemished with a 4-0 shutout of Cass on Tuesday. Dalton improved to 12-0 overall and finished Region 7-AAAA play with a 7-0 mark. Cass (6-6, 4-3) will host Carrollton in a non-region match next Monday at 7:30 p.m. The Colonels have finished fourth in the region standings.

March 25, 2025 The Purple Hurricanes scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and added on in each successive frame Tuesday in a 13-3 Region 7-AAAA win over Woodland at Richard Bell Field. Cartersville added three runs in the second inning, three in the third, and two more in the fourth. The Wildcats plated single runs in the top of the second, fourth, and fifth innings. Woodland committed five errors and issued eight walks. Andrew Purdy (4 IP, 2R, 0ER, 5H, 0BB, 7K) made the pitching start for the Canes and collected the win. Maddox Frazier (1 IP, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 1K) pitched the fifth inning for Cartersville. Austin Daves (1 IP, 5R, 1ER, 3H, 3BB, 1K) started on the mound for Woodland and was charged with the loss. Zaylen Cochran (1 IP, 3R, 0ER, 2H, 2BB), Tucker James (1.2 IP, 5R, 2ER, 6H, 3BB), and Alfredo Romo (0.1 IP) pitched in relief for the Wildcats. Julez Pratt (double, four RBI) led the Cartersville bats with three hits. Cole Crawford (three RBI), Nolan Elrod (two RBI), and Purdy (triple) produced two hits. Woodland (10-8, 4-6) will host Cartersville (12-7, 8-2) in a doubleheader on Friday starting at 5 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE 9, HERITAGE-CATOOSA 5 Jack Nelson The Tigers started fast on Tuesday at Heritage-Catoosa and held on to win the first game of a three-game series with the region-leading Generals, 9-5. Adairsville had six hits in the top of the first inning and plated seven runs for an early lead. Heritage-Catoosa responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, but got no closer. The Tigers added single runs in the second and seventh innings. Cohen Fletcher hit a solo home run for the Generals in the fifth inning. Jack Nelson (6.1 IP, 5ER, 7H, 3BB, 7K) made the pitching start and worked into the seventh inning. Jarrett Scott (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) retired the final two outs to earn a save. Nelson had three hits and one RBI for the Tigers’ offense. Ethan Long (double, three RBI) and Isaac Burnett (RBI) contributed two hits. Peyton Bowen (RBI), Braxton Ryan, and Scott added one hit. The loss dropped the Generals to 12-6 overall and 6-1 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (11-6, 6-4) hosts Heritage on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The series will conclude on Friday in Ringgold. - Athletes Beyond Bartow: Wrestlers Henson and Smith earned All-American honors
March 24, 2025 Former Woodland High School standout wrestlers Caleb Henson and Jaxon Smith earned NCAA Division I All-American status this past weekend at the National Championship Tournament in Philadelphia. Defending national champion, Henson was edged in the finals. Smith placed sixth in his division. WRESTLING Caleb Henson followed up last season's title with a runner-up finish in 2025. CALEB HENSON — Virginia Tech (Jr., Woodland HS) … The defending national champion in the 149-pound weight class reached the NCAA National Championship finals this past Saturday in Philadelphia but came up just short of a second consecutive title in a 1-0 loss to 2nd-seeded Ridge Lovett of Nebraska. Nicknamed “The Hitman,” Henson reached the finals by taking a 6-2 decision over Dylan D’Emilio of Ohio State in the semifinals. He is only the second Hokie to make finals appearances. Last Thursday, Henson handled 33rd-seeded Teague Travis of Oklahoma State and 17th-ranked Jaden Aboas of Stanford to reach the quarterfinals. He then secured three-time All-American status with his 8-5 decision on Friday over 8th-seeded Jordan Williams of Little Rock. Virginia Tech placed eleventh in the 2024-25 team standings. Henson completed his junior season with a 30-2 record and is 87-9 in his collegiate career. Jaxon Smith was 20-7 in 2024-25. JAXON SMITH — University of Maryland (R-Jr., Woodland HS) … finished sixth at the NCAA National Championship in Philadelphia this past weekend in the 184-pound weight class and achieved All-American status. Seeded eighth entering the tournament, he had wins over No. 25 Jarred McGill of Edinboro, No. 9 Reece Heller of Pittsburgh, No. 14 DJ Parker of Oklahoma, and No. 12 Silas Allred of Nebraska, and he lost in the national quarterfinals to No. 1 Carter Starocci of Penn State who went on to win a fifth national title. He also had consolation losses to No. 3 Max McEnelly of Minnesota and No. 6 Chris Foca of Cornell. Smith finished the season with a 20-7 record. Maryland finished tied for 24th place in the team standings. CHINA CBA — PRO BASKETBALL ASHTON HAGANS — Xinjiang Flying Tigers (6th yr. pro; Cartersville native; University of Kentucky; Newton HS) … finished a 116-103 loss to Zhejiang on March 18 with four points, five assists, two rebounds, one steal, and one blocked shot. He did not play in a 115-86 win over Sichuan this past Saturday. The Flying Tigers play Qingdao, Shandong, and Shanghai this week on the road. The team has a 30-12 record and is in third place in the 20-team league behind Guangsha (37-6) and Shanxi (32-11). TENNIS EMILY BUSH — University of North Georgia (Jr., Cartersville HS) … won her Line 5 singles match 7-5, 6-2 but lost 0-6 at Line 3 doubles with partner Carolina Reis in the 2nd-ranked Nighthawks’ 3-4 loss at home to 18th-ranked University of West Florida on March 18. On Monday, UNG (9-5, 1-0) plays at Tusculum University and hosts 5th-ranked Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference match on Saturday. TRACK AND FIELD HAYDEN CAGLE — Berry College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … finished 35th (12.28m / 48-3.50) in the shot put and 37th (33.59m / 110-2.00) in the javelin throw last Friday and Saturday at the Emory Spring Break Classic in Atlanta. The Vikings return to Emory Thursday through Saturday for the Emory Thrills in the Hills Invitational. KAITLYN GODWIN — University of North Florida (Fr., Cass HS) … placed 57th (12.43) in the 100-meter dash and the University of Central Florida Black and Gold Invitational this past Friday and Saturday. Next for the Ospreys is the Raleigh Relays on Thursday and Friday. JOSEPH WOMACK — Furman University (Fr., Cartersville resident, Darlington HS) … finished 27th (50.48) in the 400-meter dash this past weekend at the Charlotte 49er Classic. The Paladins will participate in the Raleigh Relays on Thursday and Friday. GOLF Buck Brumlow BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Sr., Cartersville HS) … carded rounds of 69-75-67 (5-under-par) and tied for eighth individually as the Bulldogs won the 16-team Linger Longer Invitational on March 16-18 at The Landing at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Georgia. The Bulldogs had all five team members finish in the top ten of 95 players. Thirty-seventh-ranked Georgia shot 30-under-par and won by two shots over 18th-ranked Alabama and nine shots over the University of South Florida. Next on the UGA schedule is The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford University at TPC Harding Park, where the Bulldogs are the defending champions. BLANE DAVIS — Georgia College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … shot 77-79-75 (21-over) and tied for 68th on March 16-17 as GCSU hosted the Bobcat Invitational at Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee in Eatonton. The Bobcats will play in the Peach Belt Conference Championship on April 18-20 at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta. BRODY TIDWELL — Georgia State University (So., Cartersville HS) … fired rounds of 73-78-71 (6-over) and tied for 47th individually at the Linger Longer Invitational on March 16-18 at The Landing at Reynolds Lake Oconee. The Panthers finished 13th in the 16-team field. Georgia State will play in the Seahawk Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday in Cape Fear, North Carolina. SOFTBALL KILEY ARNOLD — Shorter University (So., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-9 including one double, three walks, and scored three runs in four road losses this past Friday and Saturday — two at UNC Pembroke and two at Francis Marion University. The Hawks (4-21, 1-7 Conference Carolinas) visit Erskine College for a doubleheader on Wednesday, host Lees-McRae College on Friday, and Young Harris College on Saturday. HAYLEE DISHMON — Georgia Highlands College (So., Cass HS) … in one game at Wallace State CC on March 18 and a home game against Georgia Military College this past Saturday, Dishmon was 1-for-7 with one RBI and one run scored. The Chargers (20-12, 1-3 GCAA) host South Georgia State for a doubleheader on Friday and East Georgia State for two games on Saturday. PEYTON DORN — Brewton Parker College (Fr., Woodland HS) … made a 5-⅓ inning start and was charged with the pitching start last Friday in a 4-3 loss at Faulkner University. Dorn allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks. The Barons (10-15-1, 4-6 Southern State Athletic Conference) host the University of Mobile for a doubleheader on Friday and William Carey University (MS) for a doubleheader on Saturday. Megan Gregory MEGAN GREGORY — Campbell University (So., Adairsville HS) … made three pitching appearances last week in road games, recording one win, one loss, and one no decision. The right-hand hurler totaled 16 innings, allowing seven earned runs on 16 hits and four walks. Gregory struck out 13. She had a no-decision in five innings at Queens University (NC) on March 18, a win in a seven-inning complete game at Towson University last Saturday, and was charged with the pitching loss in a four-inning appearance on Sunday at Towson in a 2-1 loss. The Fighting Camels (22-8, 8-1 Coastal Athletic Association) host Hofstra University in a three-game conference series on Friday through Sunday. ANSLEY HIGHT — Reinhardt University (So., Cass HS) … went 8-for-11 at the plate in a four-game Kentucky road trip last Thursday and Saturday. The Tigers won two of the three games in the conference series. BASEBALL DREW BILLINGS — Trinity Baptist College (Jr., Woodland HS) … faced three batters and retired the final two outs of the seventh inning on March 18 in a 3-1 loss to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Jacksonville. Billings walked one and struck out one in a no-decision outing. The Eagles (14-11, 5-1 NCCAA) host a three-game series with Toccoa Falls College on Friday and Saturday. MICAH EARWOOD — Southeastern University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … pitched a scoreless eighth inning last Thursday in the NAIA 4th-ranked Fire’s 3-2 win over 7th-ranked Webber International in Lakeland. Earwood allowed one hit and hit a batter. He recorded one strikeout. Southeastern (26-4, 5-3 The Sun Conference) travels to Sarasota for a three-game conference series at New College of Florida. COLIN EATON — East Tennessee State University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … retired the final two outs of the eighth inning with no decision in an eventual 10-inning win on March 18 at No. 1-ranked Tennessee. He allowed one hit and one walk but no runs. Eaton also entered in the sixth inning and worked 2-⅓ innings with no decision in a 13-7 home loss to Samford this past Sunday. March 25, 2025 Georgia Highlands College baseball torched the visiting Bryan College JV in a doubleheader on Monday, 7-1 and 29-2 at Bentley Field on the Cartersville campus. The Chargers broke open a 1-1 game with a five-run fourth inning in the opener. GHC added an insurance run in the fifth inning. The second game contained none of that drama, although the visiting Lions led 2-0 in the middle of the first inning. Georgia Highlands sent sixteen men to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and took a 16-2 lead. The Chargers tacked on eight more runs in both the second and third frames in the rout. GHC used eight pitchers in the doubleheader including Brodie Chestnutt (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 2K), Braxton Wade (2.1 IP, 0R, 3H, 2BB, 5K), William Homan (1.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K), and Jackson Greer (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 1K) in Game 1. Heath Whitlock (2 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K), Gavin Webster (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K), Calvin Koo (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K), and Pedro Luciano (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) pitched in Game 2. Andrew Bishop (home run, two doubles, six RBI), Ali Banks (triple, double, six RBI), and Kenskey Thomas (three RBI) had five hits in the doubleheader. - Cartersville fourth at Bowdon Invitational
March 24, 2025 The Cartersville High gymnastics team finished fourth last Friday at the Bowden Invitational in Carrollton. The Hurricanes placed fourth with a team score of 93.425. Bremen won the invitational (107.025), followed by Bowdon (101.55) and Pike County (97.475). Emerie Elrod led Cartersville with a third place vault score of 9.1. Other scoring contributors for the Lady Canes were Sydney Jackson, Laney Saunders, Adalynn Weir, Kyndal Shook, and Katy Grace Wolfe. Cartersville is currently ranked in eighth place in the Class A-4A standings. The next meet for the Hurricanes is at Lovett on March 31.
